Care for urologic cancers

Urologic cancers affect parts of the male and female urinary system and the male reproductive organs. Common types of urologic cancers include:

Urologic cancers have different symptoms, and some show no symptoms until the cancer is quite advanced. However, one common symptom of bladder, kidney and prostate cancer is a change in urinary habits, such as:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent need to urinate, even if you just went to the bathroom
  • Getting up multiple times in the night to urinate
  • Having to urinate more than usual
  • Problems urinating, including an inconsistent stream

Unexplained lower back pain can also be a symptom, as can erectile dysfunction or a lump in the abdomen or testicles.

Risk factors and prevention

Some of the biggest risk factors for urologic cancers include heavy tobacco and alcohol use, along with a family history of these cancers. Age is another risk factor for most urologic cancers. However, testicular cancer is most often diagnosed in men between the ages of 15 and 35.

Race and ethnicity may also play a role. Non-Hispanic Black men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer. However, both bladder and testicular cancers are more likely to be diagnosed in non-Hispanic white men. For more information about urologic cancers, visit the Urology Care Foundation.
