Specialized care for individuals with amputations
The goal of our amputee rehabilitation program is to provide the highest quality care to individuals after amputation.
Our team of specialists have undergone specialized training to work with individuals with partial foot amputations, below the knee amputation and above the knee amputation to restore strength and function to the level experienced before surgery.
The services offered through Amputation Rehabilitation include:
- Physical therapy evaluation: Evaluation of strength, range of motion, balance in standing and sitting, residual limb check, general mobility, and gait with the prosthesis.
- Evaluation of current prosthesis: Regular evaluation of alignment and fit of the socket.
- Instruction in home exercise program for strengthening, balance, and improved flexibility: Ensures that gains made in the clinic transfer to where the patient needs them most: the home and community.
- Ongoing gait training: Instruction in gait training with the prosthesis and appropriate assistive devices, if needed. This includes training for improved community mobility which may include ramps, curbs, stairs, hills, and outdoor terrain.
- Advanced mobility training: Training may include agility, running, and return to work activities depending on patient-specific goals.
- Coordinating care: Physical therapist will work closely with local prosthetist to ensure alignment and fit of the socket and overall function of the prosthesis is optimized for each individual.
