{"id":1427,"date":"2012-10-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prd-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=1427"},"modified":"2023-12-27T17:37:38","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T17:37:38","slug":"halloween-safety-101-trick-or-treating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/halloween-safety-101-trick-or-treating\/","title":{"rendered":"Halloween safety 101: trick-or-treating","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Halloween: it\u2019s the one day of the year when kids and grownups alike can transform into anything their mischievous minds can imagine\u2014from princesses and paupers to rock stars, wranglers, dinosaurs and divas.<\/p>\n<p>A tip for enjoying the day\u2019s treats: Parents should take some extra safety precautions, especially as kids head out for trick-or-treating, says Laura Miccile, supervisor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/patients-visitors\/patient-family-support-services\/childhood-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Childhood Safety<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital &amp; Health Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s dark outside. Kids are excited. They\u2019re distracted. There\u2019s a lot of traffic,\u201d Miccile says. \u201cIt\u2019s a potentially dangerous combination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miccile recommends that a trusted adult accompany all children younger than age 12 who are out trick-or-treating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYounger kids may not be able to safely cross the street and observe other safety precautions\u2014especially when they\u2019re excited or distracted,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s because kids younger than 12 may not be able to properly judge the speed of cars and how far away they are.\u201d Younger kids might also have trouble figuring out which direction traffic sounds are coming from\u2014another reason they should stick with adults.<\/p>\n<p>Older kids should stay in a group and carry a cell phone, Miccile says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, I see people driving around neighborhoods with their parking lights on,\u201d she says. \u201cThey should use their full headlights\u2014it helps them see children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always a good idea to give each child a flashlight to carry, and to remind each one to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay on well-lit streets and in familiar neighborhoods.<\/li>\n<li>Stay with friends, never enter cars or homes for treats, and only visit homes with a welcoming light on.<\/li>\n<li>Cross streets in designated crosswalks or at a corner, use sidewalks when possible, stay off lawns, and walk\u2014don\u2019t run\u2014from home to home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cRunning between parked cars is especially dangerous because kids are hard to see and drivers may be distracted,\u201d Miccile says. And if you have to walk on the street, walk on the far edge of the road, facing traffic.
