But I felt something bigger was out there, and I was drawn to community mental health to bring this work to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Called to make a difference on a larger scale, Sally found herself at donor-supported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glmhc.org\/\">Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare<\/a>. For eight years, she\u2019s served as a clinical manager in Child &amp; Family Services, where she oversees a department of therapists and interns.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18787\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Woman smiling\" width=\"336\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/Sally-Headshot.jpg 1847w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Sally McDaniel, LMHC, LMFT, SUDP, CMHS, is clinical manager, Child &amp; Family Services at Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Part of her work includes partnering with local districts to place counselors inside schools, providing therapy to students who wouldn\u2019t receive services otherwise.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID-19 pandemic\u2019s psychological fallout<\/h2>\n<p>From her vantage point as a clinical manager, Sally has witnessed the COVID-19 pandemic change the lives of little ones and youth in Pierce County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 has had a huge impact on our youth,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe&#8217;ve seen an increase in generalized anxiety, social anxiety, depression, suicide ideation (or thoughts) and suicide attempts. There\u2019s also a regression of life skills. Some kids who went through this pandemic in elementary school are now in middle school and missed those elementary school years. Same with middle school \u2014 some went on to high school, and they&#8217;re still acting like middle schoolers. There have been real social deficits and regression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This reality has also been realized nationally. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2021\/12\/07\/us-surgeon-general-issues-advisory-on-youth-mental-health-crisis-further-exposed-by-covid-19-pandemic.html#:~:text=media%40hhs.gov-,U.S.%20Surgeon%20General%20Issues%20Advisory%20on%20Youth%20Mental%20Health%20Crisis,nation's%20youth%20mental%20health%20crisis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In December 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a public advisory on the youth mental health crisis intensified by COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as Sally and others across the <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/services\/behavioral-health\/\">MultiCare Behavioral Health Network<\/a> share in the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/changing-minds\/\">MultiCare Changing Minds virtual event<\/a>, there is hope thanks to donor-powered behavioral health programs and services.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18783\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/changing-minds.jpg\" alt=\"Save the date card\" width=\"667\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/changing-minds.jpg 667w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/changing-minds-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/our-foundations\/multicare-behavioral-health-foundation\/\">MultiCare Behavioral Health Foundation\u2019s<\/a> program at noon on May 4, 2022, viewers will hear from Ben Danielson, MD, a pediatrician and clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Danielson\u2019s focus is promoting well-being and dignity, especially for marginalized communities. Greater Lakes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navos.org\/\">Navos<\/a> and MultiCare Behavioral Health staff will also speak to how the Network has met the youth mental health crisis head-on. Additionally, attendees will meet special guest Allison, who will share how a MultiCare Behavioral Health program brought out the best in her 7-year-old son Ryker.<\/p>\n<p>With community generosity, critical mental health services will become more accessible to vulnerable children, youth and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s really important to support behavioral health services because sometimes it&#8217;s the only way youth will get help,\u201d Sally says. \u201cIf we aren\u2019t in schools, if we aren\u2019t in the community and if we aren\u2019t able to partner, then these kids\u2019 mental health symptoms will continue to increase in severity. Sometimes, we are their lifeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a former Greater Lakes client corroborates: \u201cThose (therapy) sessions saved my life and truly have stuck with me to this day.
