{"id":19655,"date":"2022-05-25T16:18:21","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T16:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=19655"},"modified":"2024-04-02T18:07:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T18:07:38","slug":"infant-formula-shortage-tips-and-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/infant-formula-shortage-tips-and-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Infant formula shortage: Tips and resources","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"post-title\">If you\u2019re having difficulty finding formula, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/h2>\n<p>Like many families around the country, the nationwide infant formula shortage is causing panic and stress for parents and caregivers trying their best to keep their infants happy, healthy and fed.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having difficulty finding formula, here are some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/tips-tools\/ask-the-pediatrician\/Pages\/Are-there-shortages-of-infant-formula-due-to-COVID-19.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>. And here\u2019s what providers at Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital recommend:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a scary time for many families, on top of everything else that makes caring for an infant stressful,\u201d says Andrea Donalty, MD, FAAP, medical director of Mary Bridge Children\u2019s primary care network. \u201cWe strongly encourage families to not dilute formula or make\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/baby\/formula-feeding\/Pages\/Is-Homemade-Baby-Formula-Safe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homemade recipes<\/a>\u00a0as those things can do more harm than good for your child. The best thing to do is to talk to your child\u2019s pediatrician for appropriate alternatives for your child\u2019s needs and for resources that might be available.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Here are answers to common questions about the shortage:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Can I give my infant another formula?\u00a0<\/strong>It depends. In most cases, especially if you\u2019re switching from a name brand to a private label, this may be OK, but it depends on your child and their dietary sensitivities. Always give a formula that is age-appropriate and check with your pediatrician first. Generally speaking, if your child is not on a specific formula for health reasons, any formula, including generic store brands, would be acceptable. All infant formulas sold in US stores meet very strict rules about ingredients as well as regulations on the manufacturing and storage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is cow\u2019s milk a safe alternative?<\/strong>\u00a0Again, it depends. For infants closer to 12 months old,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/nutrition\/Pages\/Recommended-Drinks-for-Young-Children-Ages-0-5.aspx#%3a~%3atext=Thankfully%2c%20the%20best-choice%20beverages%2cfor%20healthy%20growth%20and%20development.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whole milk<\/a>\u00a0can be a safe alternative to formula, but it\u2019s not advised for infants younger than 12 months on a regular basis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What about other milk alternatives?<\/strong>\u00a0For infants younger than 12 months, it\u2019s not advised to give milk substitutes, whether animal milks or plant milks. These can be deficient in essential nutrients for your child\u2019s growth and health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is it dangerous to\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/baby\/formula-feeding\/Pages\/how-to-safely-prepare-formula-with-water.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dilute formula<\/strong><\/a><strong>?\u00a0<\/strong>Yes. Unless your child\u2019s pediatrician instructs you otherwise, always follow the recommended water-to-formula ratios. Otherwise, your infant will not get adequate nutrition.
