<\/p>\nJeannie Sagle likes to walk. And not just a little stroll to pick up the mail or visit with a neighbor.<\/p>\n
\u201cLong distances \u2014 three, four miles at a time,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
She typically gets more than 10,000 steps a day.<\/p>\n
\u201cFarther, quite often,\u201d Sagle says.<\/p>\n
So, when osteoarthritis wore away the cartilage in her knees,\u00a0living with the pain and reduced mobility wasn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n
Sagle\u2019s first knee replacement, in 2019, solved half the problem. But a little over a year later, her other knee began slowing her down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt got worse as it went along,\u201d she says. \u201cBy the end I was not able to walk very far at all, and it was bone on bone.\u201d<\/p>\n
In November 2021, Sagle got her second knee replacement, this time with Robert Tamurian, MD, using the ROSA\u00ae (RO<\/strong>botic S<\/strong>urgical A<\/strong>ssistant) Knee robotic surgical assistant at MultiCare Allenmore Hospital.<\/p>\n The ROSA system allows surgeons to be more precise, make smaller incisions and preserve more bone. But all that mattered to Sagle was that the surgery made the pain go away \u2014 eventually.<\/p>\n Recovery still took some time, and Sagle says she had less patience with her second go-around.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m getting older,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t want to waste much time.\u201d<\/p>\n Sagle, 75, says both recoveries were painful at first, but \u201cthe mind is a wonderful thing\u201d because she largely forgets the pain.<\/p>\n \u201cThat part went quickly,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n And she was eager to get back to walking. With the help of her physical therapist, Sagle focused on increasing her mobility.<\/p>\n Prior to surgery, she could walk no more than a short block without significant pain. Within three or four weeks after surgery, her physical therapist gave her the go-ahead to walk a block.<\/p>\n \u201cBy two months I was walking close to a mile,\u201d she says. \u201cBy three months, it was close to two miles.\u201d<\/p>\n Sagle says her physical therapist \u201ctold me what I could do and how much, so I wouldn\u2019t overdo it.\u201d<\/p>\n While she still has some swelling in her knee, it continues to go down. And most important, Sagle is back to doing what she loves.<\/p>\n \u201cI can do hills.\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter the terrain. I can climb, I can hike. Stairs are no problem. All the things you need knees for!\u201d<\/p>\n Even for those who don\u2019t walk or hike as much as Sagle does, knee replacement can be a life-changer.<\/p>\n \u201cI would recommend it to everybody who needs it,\u201d she says. \u201cThe quality of life, if you cannot walk without pain, is not good.\u201d<\/p>\n Whether it\u2019s a long hike or the trek from the living room to the kitchen, \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be walking without pain,\u201d Sagle says.<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Jeannie Sagle likes to walk.
