Sometimes you don\u2019t know what you\u2019ve got until it\u2019s gone. Turns out, that goes for pain as well as paradise.<\/p>\n

For years, Richard Frampton, 60, described his knee pain as \u201ctolerable.\u201d But after recovering from knee replacement surgery that utilized ROSA\u00ae (RO<\/strong>botic S<\/strong>urgical A<\/strong>ssistant) Knee, a new robotic-assisted joint replacement technology, he realizes how bad the pain had become.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can tolerate a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cYou don\u2019t recognize it, but it grows in intensity as it goes along. And it\u2019s so gradual you accept it. \u2026 The absence of it is a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, even stairs don\u2019t phase him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not taking two stairs at a time like I used to when I was young,\u201d Frampton says. \u201cBut there\u2019s no pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frampton\u2019s knee troubles began on the basketball court.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played basketball until I was 50 years old,\u201d he says. \u201cSomeone hit me in the knee when I was 48 or 49. I thought I just had a bone bruise, but it never went away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The resulting abnormal bone growth from his injury got progressively worse until he finally made an appointment with Robert Tamurian, MD<\/a>, orthopedic surgeon and medical director of MultiCare\u2019s orthopedic surgery program in the Puget Sound region.<\/p>\n

But he wasn\u2019t ready for surgery yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked him what my options were,\u201d Frampton says.<\/p>\n

Dr. Taumurian offered him injections to help stave off surgery \u2014 and that worked for a while.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then COVID hit and I wasn\u2019t able to see him for a whole year,\u201d Frampton says.<\/p>\n

By then, Dr. Taumurian said it was time for knee replacement and Frampton agreed.<\/p>\n

In December 2021 he became one of the first patients to undergo knee replacement at MultiCare Allenmore Hospital<\/a> with the assistance of the ROSA Knee robotic system. This system is designed especially for knee surgeries and helps surgeons position implants with incredible accuracy and provides them with greater flexibility and precision during surgery.<\/p>\n

Frampton said the robotic part was \u201ccool\u201d but not as exciting as discovering what life free of knee pain is like. He works on the factory floor at a Boeing plant and today walks four miles on concrete floors some days.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore I had the surgery I\u2019d still be walking, but not that far,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019d have to sit down and ice it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He acknowledges the first 10 days or so after surgery weren\u2019t exactly fun.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not in my happy place,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

But he only took pain medication for the first four days and relied on ice after that. He stayed home for several weeks before returning to the job.<\/p>\n

Frampton says his wife is also happy with the results. She enjoys planning walks to the Nisqually Reach, near their Tumwater home, bike trips and kayak excursions in the San Juans.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore my surgery I would just hate going on walks. My balance was terrible. Riding a bike was terrible. My knee didn\u2019t like the kayak,\u201d he says. \u201cNow it\u2019s no big deal. I can go out there and have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frampton has Type 2 diabetes and says his blood sugars have tapered down after the surgery, both because he\u2019s able to be more active and because pain itself raises blood sugar. He\u2019s also noticed a general rise in his energy level now that he\u2019s not living with chronic knee pain.<\/p>\n

He urges anyone suffering from knee pain to schedule an appointment, even if they aren\u2019t ready for surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are options,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He staved off surgery for three years with injections, but, ultimately, he\u2019s glad he opted for the surgery.<\/p>\n
