Born almost 10 years to the day apart, the dynamic duo have a lot in common \u2014 their love of being on the water, their passion for giving back to their South Sound community and their sense of humor.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Zink and Blanchfield were connected in a new way when they were diagnosed with cancer within just eight months of each other.<\/p>\n<p>Zink\u2019s journey began on Jan. 28, 2021, when imaging tests detected enlarged lymph nodes and several masses on her ovaries. A week later, she went in for surgery. On Feb. 9, the then 46-year-old received a diagnosis \u2014 stage III ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really hard to process,\u201d Zink recalls. \u201cYou\u2019re hearing everything, and they\u2019re talking about you, but it doesn\u2019t feel real to you yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While navigating the whirlwind of emotions that comes with an unexpected diagnosis, Zink was referred to medical oncologist Blair Irwin, MD, and gynecologic oncologist Wafic Massry, MD, FACOG, at MultiCare Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by community generosity through the <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/our-foundations\/multicare-health-foundation\/\">MultiCare Health Foundation<\/a>, the cancer center helps South Sound cancer patients access high-quality care close to home, including cancer research, clinical trials and innovative treatments.<\/p>\n<p>During the first consultation with her care team, Zink found reassurance amid the uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just remember looking into Dr. Massry\u2019s eyes; during COVID, that was the only view we had,\u201d she says. \u201cHis eyes said, \u2018I\u2019m going to take care of you no matter what.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know what was about to happen, but I knew I was in good hands and that was huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A second family at the cancer center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21903\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Woman in hospital receiving cancer treatment.\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/Jennifer-Photo-2-1-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Zink began a personalized treatment plan that included several rounds of chemotherapy, her care team became a beacon of hope. She immediately connected with nurse navigators Maranatha Anderson, RN; Becky Aurand, RN, MSN, BS; and Barbara Hackney, RN, OCN, who served as her guides through treatment.<\/p>\n<p>At MultiCare, navigators like this <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/nurse-navigators-empower-cancer-patients-on-their-healing-journeys\/\">empower cancer patients on their healing journeys<\/a>, connecting individuals with information and support services to eliminate potential barriers to care. For Zink, this involved explaining how treatments work, assisting with paperwork, answering questions and, most important, reminding her she had a second family at the cancer center.<\/p>\n<p>Zink remembers one above-and-beyond moment with Anderson after she was admitted to the hospital following surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaranatha came to visit me,\u201d she shares. \u201cShe didn\u2019t need to come see me, but she did to let me know I wasn\u2019t alone and that I had a friend up on the fourth floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of moments like these, Zink and her sister coined the expression \u201cEverybody needs a Maranatha\u201d \u2014 a reminder of the importance of nurse navigators in helping patients and their families get through one of the most difficult times of their lives.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Celebrating major milestones<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Looking back on her experience nearly a year and a half later, Zink is grateful for the community at the cancer center that lifted her up throughout her experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Massry and Dr. Irwin are remarkable human beings to do this work and to do it in a way that gives you so much compassion and hope,\u201d she shares. \u201cAnd my nurse navigators \u2014 Maranatha, Barb and Becky. They\u2019re my lifeline and my favorite phone-a-friends. They just go above and beyond to take care of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the journey has been long, Zink has reached a new milestone \u2014 she shows no evidence of disease and is officially cancer-free. She\u2019s getting back to her happy places, spending time outside with her family, finding the best new hiking trails and celebrating her son\u2019s many accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to watch my son graduate from high school,\u201d she says. \u201cI got to watch him enlist in the military.
