{"id":22991,"date":"2022-11-15T07:00:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T07:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=22991"},"modified":"2024-01-19T00:30:45","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T00:30:45","slug":"mom-of-three-praises-care-at-auburn-birth-center-nicu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/mom-of-three-praises-care-at-auburn-birth-center-nicu\/","title":{"rendered":"Mom of three praises care at Auburn birth center, NICU","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amanda England has a big smile on her face as she\u2019s buzzed into <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/find-a-location\/auburn-medical-center\/auburn-medical-family-birth-center\/\">MultiCare Auburn Medical Center\u2019s family birth center<\/a> and makes her way to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where the tiniest patients receive care.<\/p>\n<p>This day was the last time she\u2019d make the trek to the unit. After nearly a week of worry and anxiety, England felt a sense of relief knowing that baby Ryker England \u2014 still a tiny bundle \u2014 was coming home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning! Are you ready to go home?\u201d the nurse asks as England walks over to check on her little one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we can\u2019t wait!\u201d the young mom says as she coos at baby Ryker. \u201cAre you ready to meet your big brothers and your grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>England is a single mom of three boys: 10-year-old Berkley, 4-year-old Preston and now little Ryker. She says she was actually looking forward to the sleepless nights, the early morning feedings and the years of diaper changes.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to Ryker, nothing went according to plan, she says. But through it all, the nurses and her physician were amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were right there, from the time I got to the hospital to now,\u201d she says. \u201cThey answered all my questions. They were honest and kind. I\u2019m not having any more children, but if I did, I\u2019d certainly come back here. I tell all my friends who get pregnant to come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Not according to plan<\/h2>\n<p>Because this was England\u2019s third child, she thought she knew the drill when it came to having babies. Little Ryker had other ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything with this one was new to me,\u201d she says. \u201cI had to be induced with my other kids, but with this one, my water broke. And he was early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her obstetrician, <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/provider\/alyssa-hamlin\/\">Alyssa Hamlin, MD<\/a>, was supportive throughout, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Hamlin is amazing. She went the extra mile with Ryker,\u201d England says. \u201cThe doctor stood with me for an hour when they were trying to give me an epidural. The doctor is very personable. Not the kind of person who comes in, delivers the baby, then leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>England has Type 2 diabetes, making the pregnancy high risk. She struggled to keep her blood sugar in line and insulin levels where they needed to be. Diabetes raises the risk of birth defects, stillbirth and preterm birth.<\/p>\n<p>Ryker was born at 37 weeks \u2014 near the 40-week mark considered full-term. He was 4 pounds, 15 ounces. The scary part: He wasn\u2019t breathing in those first moments.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone jumped into action. Before long, there was a collective sigh of relief as Ryker belted out his first cries.<\/p>\n<h2>Auburn experience<\/h2>\n<p>England had two of her three children at Auburn Medical Center. Ryker\u2019s delivery didn\u2019t go as planned, but she says everyone was professional and helped her through a difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would not have been able to do it without all the doctors and nurses,\u201d she says. \u201cThe nurses here take such good care of the babies and the moms. I wanted to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says she didn\u2019t have a good birth experience with her first child at another hospital. She came to Auburn Medical Center to have her second and loved it, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t tell you to be quiet or not to push,\u201d she says of the nurses.<\/p>\n<p>England experiences anxiety and depression, and says her nurses took special care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first day was hard,\u201d she says. \u201cThey were here for him and me, especially going through everything alone. The nurses assured me, told me to take care of myself so I can take care of my kids. I was worried about my mental health postpartum, but nurse Amanda [Nemeth] really helped me. She told me to remember to take time for myself. Take things one day at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>England was approved for medical leave from her job and plans to spend part of this time away in counseling. Life hasn\u2019t been easy for her. She has experienced homelessness and domestic violence, and has struggled to care for her children alone. Her mom, Wendy Wilson, has been a big help.<\/p>\n<p>As she talks about her history, England starts to cry. A nurse walks by and hands her a box of tissues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank everybody here, truly,\u201d England says. \u201cWe\u2019re blessed to have people like this here. You don\u2019t see that at a lot of places. They are so personable, and that\u2019s huge. I thought I would be alone during this. Not once \u2014 from the time I checked in to now \u2014 have I felt alone.
