{"id":23299,"date":"2022-11-30T07:00:29","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T07:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=23299"},"modified":"2024-01-02T17:38:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T17:38:05","slug":"for-former-travel-nurse-all-roads-lead-to-auburn-medical-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/for-former-travel-nurse-all-roads-lead-to-auburn-medical-center\/","title":{"rendered":"For former travel nurse, all roads lead to Auburn Medical Center","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christina Isringhausen has a running joke: All her roads lead back to <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/auburn-medical-center\/\">MultiCare Auburn Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her journey started six years ago, when she and her cat Maui left their home near St. Louis, Mo., for a travel nurse contract in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the end of that contract, she and a friend were sitting outside when a recruiter called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about a job just outside of Seattle?\u201d the recruiter asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo way,\u201d Isringhausen responded, and hung up the phone. She didn\u2019t want to go to a land of rain when she could bask in the sun in the middle of winter.<\/p>\n<p>Her friend eyed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDidn\u2019t you say you wanted to be a travel nurse to try new things?\u201d she asked. \u201cHave new experiences?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isringhausen blinked. Then called the recruiter back. She spent the rest of the winter at Auburn Medical Center\u2019s emergency department.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23303 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/11\/Christina-head-shot-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of blonde woman in blue shirt\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/11\/Christina-head-shot-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/11\/Christina-head-shot-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/11\/Christina-head-shot.jpg 1034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\u201cI probably would have extended, but I had already made a pact with another traveler that we\u2019d spend the summer in Florida,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>After a few weeks of sunny beaches, Isringhausen came back to Auburn and extended twice. She reached the limit for contracts during that time period, so she went home to St. Louis for a while, taking a staff position and completing her bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing.<\/p>\n<p>Then along came COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2020, Isringhausen was itching to travel once again. She took a contract to start in January in Minnesota, working along with a friend who had a staff position.<\/p>\n<p>As the end of that contract approached, the road to Auburn called again. She called the recruiter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to go back to Auburn,\u201d she told them.<\/p>\n<h2>The road to education, leadership<\/h2>\n<p>There are two things Isringhausen loves to do: be a nurse and help educate other nurses.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Auburn \u2014 for the third time \u2014 Candice Murdock gave Isringhausen her orientation. At the time, Murdock was a staff nurse in the ED and had just accepted a role in nursing professional development (NPD).<\/p>\n<p>As they chatted, Isringhausen mentioned she recently earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing, with a goal of becoming an educator. There was an NPD spot open at MultiCare\u2019s off-campus emergency departments, Murdock told her \u2014 a full-time, permanent position.<\/p>\n<p>Isringhausen applied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a hard decision between being a traveler and taking a full-time role,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I love precepting and teaching nurses new things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, if she\u2019s honest, there are downsides to being a traveler, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not looking for housing every three months,\u201d Isringhausen says. \u201cStarting a new contract is like the first day of school. You don\u2019t know anyone or where things are. There\u2019s also a lack of stability. Contracts get canceled sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In late spring 2022, the position for assistant nurse manager in the emergency department at Auburn Medical Center opened up. The road again led her back to Auburn. She started the job in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally have grown to advance into these positions and see it as a way to have a positive influence to grow this department,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve done contracts all over and this is the place I kept coming back to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018I feel safe here\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>A few months into the permanent position, Isringhausen feels like she\u2019s got the basics down pat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not perfect \u2014 no ED is,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the teamwork and collaboration here is different than in other places I\u2019ve ever been. There were some places where I felt unsafe. I feel safe here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best thing is the work family she has built.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I can go to my managers for anything I need,\u201d Isringhausen says. \u201cAnd I try to do the same for the team. My door is open. I am out on the floor. I work to ensure everyone feels confident that they can come to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yes, her staffing matrix has a number of travelers on it. She\u2019s working on that one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some great travelers, and every day when I see them, I put out the offer, \u2018Do you want to stay?
