His primary care physician referred him to the donor-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/impact-areas\/multicare-pulse-heart-institute\/\">Pulse Heart Institute<\/a>, where Garcia became well acquainted with board-certified cardiologist and <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/our-foundations\/good-samaritan-foundation\/\">MultiCare Good Samaritan Foundation<\/a> board member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulseheartinstitute.org\/provider\/uma-m-krishnan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uma Krishnan, MD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is tenacious, she is thorough and ended up saving my life,\u201d Garcia says of Dr. Krishnan. \u201cI didn&#8217;t know what a heart murmur was when she started, but I felt as though I was in competent hands. I felt very secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During this first appointment, Dr. Krishnan discovered that Garcia had a valve issue. This can interfere with normal blood flow through the heart. She continued to monitor his condition, and in 2018 determined that his valve would need to be replaced via open-heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surgery is like having a valve job done on a car \u2014 you get more efficient firing and more efficient use,\u201d Garcia explains. \u201cWith two titanium heart valves replaced, you get more oxygenated blood into the bloodstream. In February 2019, I went through an open-heart surgery, and zoom, within three months I was feeling stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Coming full circle at Pulse<\/h2>\n<p>Post-procedure, Garcia began going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulseheartinstitute.org\/location\/pulse-heart-institute-cardiac-and-pulmonary-rehabilitation-auburn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pulse Heart Institute Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation \u2013 Auburn.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There, he noticed the staff and nurses assisting him with exercises were busy with several other tasks, like wiping down equipment. When he later joined MultiCare Health System as the volunteer services coordinator for the South King County region, this Pulse experience remained in the back of his mind.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Garcia is to credit for bringing the cardiac rehab volunteer assignment into existence to help Pulse staff focus their time on providing the best possible care for patients.<\/p>\n<p>Nazaha Dhillon is the program\u2019s first volunteer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24651\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24651\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24651\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/Resized_Resized_20230209_113814-242x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Woman with dark hair and face mask stands in front of Pulse Heart Institute of Auburn Medical Center wall sign\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/Resized_Resized_20230209_113814-242x300.jpeg 242w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/Resized_Resized_20230209_113814-827x1024.jpeg 827w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/Resized_Resized_20230209_113814-768x951.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/Resized_Resized_20230209_113814.jpeg 1034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nazaha Dhillon volunteers her time at Pulse Heart Institute Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation \u2013 Auburn.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn 2014, my grandmother passed away from a heart attack, and I wanted to become something in the health care system to help with preventative care,\u201d Dhillon shares. \u201cI\u2019ve also been wanting to volunteer at a hospital for years, and I love the atmosphere and how friendly everyone is and how it\u2019s just like a little community as soon as you go through the doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe employees have been trying to help me learn a little bit, too, like showing me EKGs and how different equipment works, as well as the equipment\u2019s purpose,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s been really exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lead clinical exercise physiologist Lindsay Olsen, BS, ACSM-CEP, CCRP, is already thankful for Dhillon\u2019s addition to the team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that on the day we have our volunteer, the day will be easier for staff, which ultimately improves our patient experience,\u201d Olsen says. \u201cWith the equipment ready to go because of Nazaha, there are less wait times for patients to switch from one piece of equipment to the other. It\u2019s also given patients one more friendly face to start their session.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0The future of cardiac care<\/h2>\n<p>Garcia views the Auburn cardio rehab volunteer assignment as a pilot that will eventually grow across the Puget Sound region. He hopes that down the road there will be an opportunity for volunteers to take on an advisory committee role, helping patients navigate the fear and anxiety of an upcoming heart procedure or surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia also knows that the future of our communities\u2019 heart health is linked to donor generosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeart issues for my generation and for men in general \u2014 it&#8217;s a pretty big issue,\u201d he explains. \u201cDonating to Pulse is a good investment because you\u2019re investing possibly in yourself; you never know when you get that physical and discover you may need Pulse.
