But about 80 percent of cardiovascular events can be prevented by knowing and managing your risk factors and following a heart-healthy lifestyle, which includes diet, exercise, sleep and a positive attitude.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some lifestyle tips that can help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prioritize social connection \u2014 loneliness has been identified as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/reports-and-publications\/connection\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number-one health issue in the United States<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Practice gratitude<\/li>\n<li>Engage in random acts of kindness<\/li>\n<li>Get the recommended seven hours of sleep<\/li>\n<li>Exercise regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risk factors that place women at higher risk for cardiovascular events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age (55 and older)<\/li>\n<li>Family history of premature heart disease in first-degree relatives (parent, sibling or child)<\/li>\n<li>Elevated blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco use<\/li>\n<li>Elevated cholesterol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u201cRisk-enhancing\u201d factors that may also put women at increased risk of cardiovascular disease:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inflammatory diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma)<\/li>\n<li>Ethnicity factors (South Asian ancestry)<\/li>\n<li>Metabolic syndrome \u2014 have at least three of these conditions:\n<ul>\n<li>Triglycerides over 150 mg\/dL<\/li>\n<li>Fasting blood glucose greater than 100 mg\/dL (or on medication for hyperglycemia)<\/li>\n<li>HDL-C less than 50 mg\/dL<\/li>\n<li>Blood pressure 130\/85 or higher (or on blood pressure medication)<\/li>\n<li>Waist circumference: 35 inches or more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Persistently elevated triglycerides<\/li>\n<li>Persistently elevated LDL or \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Chronic kidney disease<\/li>\n<li>Early menstruation (under age 11)<\/li>\n<li>Preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, low- or high-birth weight baby<\/li>\n<li>Premature menopause (under age 40)<\/li>\n<li>Polycystic ovarian syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Depression and anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important to know your risk. You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.acc.org\/ascvd-risk-estimator-plus\/#!\/calculate\/estimate\/\">American College of Cardiology risk estimator app<\/a> or learn more about risk from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulseheartinstitute.org\/heart-health-self-assessment\/\">heart health self-assessment<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulseheartinstitute.org\/heart-healthy-lifestyle\/\">downloadable heart health guides<\/a>. Your provider can also help you determine your personal cardiovascular risk and a plan to reduce your risk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/how-to-improve-heart-health\/\">Read about more ways to improve your heart health, including physical activity, healthy diet, tobacco use and more.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Women\u2019s cardiovascular health programs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulseheartinstitute.org\/about-pulse\/our-patient-centers\/cardiovascular-health-program\/\">Pulse Cardiovascular Health Program<\/a> \u2014 for those who have at least two risk factors and are referred by their provider \u2014 helps patients set individual goals and develop a plan to accomplish them.<\/p>\n<p>The prevention program was developed to educate women to be their own advocate for better heart health and improve access to cardiovascular care for women.
