When Jessica Jamison was diagnosed with breast cancer, her 4-year-old son Adam was sitting quietly by her side.<\/p>\n

Jessica, her husband Stuart and Adam had recently moved to Washington, and their little boy often tagged along with Mom.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam knew that at my appointments, he had to be quiet unless he was asked a question,\u201d Jessica says. \u201cAnd when we got to the car, he was allowed to ask questions. I explained that there were bad cells in my breast \u2014 that the surgeon was going to remove them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe asked if it would hurt, and I said no because I would be in a special sleep,\u201d she continues. \u201cHe asked if that was like Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) in Maleficent, and I said yes \u2014 I told him I would then wake up and heal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessica\u2019s \u201cspecial sleep\u201d occurred during step one of treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ (one of the earliest forms of breast cancer): a lumpectomy at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital<\/a> to remove a tumor in each of her breasts, along with five lymph nodes.<\/p>\n

While one lump was benign, the other was stage 0, grade three, meaning the malignant cells appear abnormal and may grow or spread aggressively.<\/p>\n

Zapping cells at Puyallup\u2019s cancer resource center<\/h2>\n

Next came radiation therapy at the Good Samaritan Cancer Resource Center, which is supported by donations through MultiCare Good Samaritan Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jessica described this cancer treatment process to Adam as \u201cspecial X-rays that would zap any remaining possible cancer cells surgery may have missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was intrigued,\u201d she adds. \u201cI took him with me to radiation, and he sat in the waiting room because sessions are pretty short. Staff let him come in and showed him what everything did, and he liked coming home and telling his dad all that he saw.\u201d<\/p>\n

The level of care and empathy shown to Adam characterized Jessica\u2019s entire treatment journey, with her Good Samaritan surgeon being a particular standout.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy oncology surgeon is phenomenal,\u201d Jessica shares. \u201cShe put my mind at ease, and if I ever have to have any other surgery, I\u2019m going to request her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spreading positivity at Come Walk With Me<\/h2>\n

Following one radiation treatment session, Jessica and Adam discovered a small pink rock resembling a chewed M&M just outside the cancer resource center. On the back were the words \u201cTake a bite out of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis rock gave me an extra smile and it made me feel good and I wanted to reciprocate,\u201d Jessica explains. \u201cSo, my little boy and I painted about a dozen rocks of our own. On my last day of radiation treatments, we hid them in the same area \u2014 we were hoping that other cancer patients or maybe family or friends would find them, and it would bring joy to them as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Three<\/p>\n

Jessica and Adam so loved decorating rocks and hiding them in plain sight that they connected with the social group Bonney Lake Rocks.<\/p>\n

Last October, they placed rocks with positive messages for breast cancer patients and survivors to find along the route for Come Walk With Me<\/a> (CWWM), Good Samaritan Foundation\u2019s annual 5K in support of local breast cancer programs and services.<\/p>\n

Today, Jessica is in remission and has joined the CWWM committee to deepen her engagement with her community. During this year\u2019s month-long campaign kicking off Oct. 7 in downtown Sumner, CWWM funds will benefit breast health programs at Good Samaritan and the cancer resource center, lifting up more East Pierce County patients with a cancer diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy supporting oncology services close to home, you can help remove physical and emotional barriers for patients,\u201d Jessica says. \u201cCome Walk With Me is fun and positive \u2014 it\u2019s exciting to see a bunch of people wearing pink and walking. I love feeling like I\u2019m part of a community that\u2019s supportive of one another.\u201d<\/p>\n
