Not to mention the uncomfortable conversations about diet- or weight-centric New Year\u2019s resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>These conversations are already unhelpful, but they\u2019re especially unhelpful to have with or around children. The average person only keeps their New Year\u2019s resolutions for three months before reverting to old habits.<\/p>\n<p>Living a strong, healthy life is important, but it\u2019s accomplished through so much more than food, resolutions or weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s pediatric dietitians offer the following advice to parents and caregivers to encourage a sustainable and whole-health approach to food.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Get curious about the food, not about the person eating it or their behaviors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Comment on the sensory experience of the food \u2014 its temperature, color or texture \u2014 instead of sharing what you think is missing from someone\u2019s plate.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the family traditions or culture that inspires the food at the table. Many foods we eat have stories behind them, and it\u2019s best to keep conversation focused on the food and not the person eating it.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about how nice it is to share a meal together and how grateful you are to have food to nourish your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Exercise for wellness, not weight loss<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Moving our bodies and being active is a healthy habit, but it should be done in an enjoyable way and not feel like a chore.<\/li>\n<li>If a family activity like running fits into your schedule, go for it. Just remember that physical activity keeps your body strong and shouldn\u2019t be thought of as something done exclusively for weight loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Don\u2019t comment about someone\u2019s physical appearance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t comment or participate in conversations about how someone\u2019s weight or body appearance has changed \u2014 either positively or negatively.<\/li>\n<li>Shifting the conversation to the following topics can help a child feel seen for who they are and not for the body they live in:\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019re so strong.<\/li>\n<li>I love listening to your stories.<\/li>\n<li>I love spending time with you.<\/li>\n<li>I enjoy watching you play.<\/li>\n<li>You make me smile.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re really kind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If adults practice healthy relationships with food, children will likely follow.<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve all been to family gatherings where a loved one offers unsolicited advice about what\u2019s on \u2014 or off \u2014 our plate.
