Avoid going outside when pollen is at its peak, take medication as needed and have allergy testing done if your allergies become too severe.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some additional ways to minimize exposure to pollen and some treatment options if you experience symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Avoiding pollen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Allergies tend to be worse in middle of the day, so do your outside activities in the morning or evening<\/li>\n<li>Wear glasses and a hat to keep pollen off the face and eyes<\/li>\n<li>If a child starts to experience a reaction while playing at a park, find a water fountain and wash their hands and face<\/li>\n<li>Wash off after time outdoors<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t dry sheets outdoors, as they\u2019ll accumulate pollen<\/li>\n<li>When you sleep at night, keep your head away from open windows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Seasonal allergy treatments<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a simple antihistamine before outdoor activity\n<ul>\n<li>No need for expensive name brands \u2014 generic, over-the-counter antihistamines work great<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A saltwater nasal wash or a neti pot can reduce nasal secretions and congestion, and saline doesn\u2019t have side effects<\/li>\n<li>Take a decongestant for nose and eye symptoms \u2014 both types of symptoms are primarily related to congestion<\/li>\n<li>If those steps don\u2019t work, a host of other medications are available by prescription:\n<ul>\n<li>Intranasal steroid sprays<\/li>\n<li>Antihistamine, as a nasal spray or taken by mouth<\/li>\n<li>Eye drops<\/li>\n<li>Cromolyn, which is available by prescription or as over-the-counter nasal spray or drops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How do I know whether I should try something more than medication?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Generally, allergies can be managed with simple medications and avoidance if symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are mild and don\u2019t limit attendance at school or work<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t interfere with your ability to sleep at night<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t interfere with daytime activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your life is impaired by allergies, it may be time to consider allergy immunotherapy.
