This passion for their community\u2019s hospital was recently affirmed on Dec. 11, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Early that morning, Darland woke with a start as Samlaska bolted up in bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just sat up and said call 911,\u201d she remembers. \u201cI said, \u2018What\u2019s going on?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018My heart,\u2019\u201d Darland continues.<\/p>\n<p>Due to a previous cardiac incident, Samlaska had been placed on a pacemaker and defibrillator to restore and maintain a normal heartbeat. One of the devices had malfunctioned in the night.<\/p>\n<p>Darland knew just where to go \u2014 Tacoma General Hospital.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>In good hands at Tacoma General<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The couple immediately felt that they were in good hands at the hospital\u2019s emergency department (ED).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really long, anxious day for us, but the staff there was amazing, start to finish,\u201d Darland shares.<\/p>\n<p>Matisse Hemingway, RN, was among the standout care team. She kept constant watch over Samlaska and frequently checked in, ensuring he wasn\u2019t in pain and answering any questions he or Darland had.<\/p>\n<p>From Hemingway\u2019s perspective, \u201cTim and Cynthia were very kind and patient. I appreciated their conversation and getting to know them.\u201dStaff also jumped in when Darland asked for directions to the cafeteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospital security guard started saying, \u2018Well you turn here and turn here,\u2019 and I probably had that deer-in-the-headlights look,\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd they said, \u2018You know, I\u2019ll walk down with you.\u2019 We got about three-quarters of the way, and I said, \u2018I\u2019m never gonna find my way back.\u2019 They said, \u2018I\u2019ll wait.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have Parkinson\u2019s and can get confused,\u201d Darland continues. \u201cSo, the fact that I got so much help when things were really stressful, and I was really worried about Tim \u2014 it just really meant a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Giving back to ensure great care close to home<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Darland has been a MultiCare donor for decades, and experiences like her husband\u2019s affirm her commitment to invest in the community\u2019s health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI donate because it\u2019s in my heart,\u201d she explains. \u201cIf we didn\u2019t have anything like Tacoma General here, Tim wouldn\u2019t be here. My dad had his first coronary when he was 30 years old, and I wish this had been available for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working in the Tacoma General ED, Hemingway sees the impact of philanthropy directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the respect, kindness and support we get from folks like Cynthia are some of the many reasons why our department is able to run as smoothly as it does,\u201d she shares. \u201cWe could not do it without people like her.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cynthia Darland and her husband Tim Samlaska are in their 70s and share a love of movies, travel and dining out.
