Vickie Coleman, 69, of Covington, struggled with her weight for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in an unhealthy relationship for 30 years,\u201d she explains. \u201cFood was my friend. That\u2019s how I reached 300 pounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coleman tried diets and programs like Atkins, WeightWatchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and Golo, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I didn\u2019t follow through with any of them,\u201d she admits. \u201cI\u2019d try, but then I\u2019d quit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coleman left her relationship, but says she continued eating poorly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have a lot of respect for myself to lose weight,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s why I didn\u2019t succeed on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bone-on-bone hip limits mobility<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since retiring in 2016, Coleman has had hip pain so severe, she can\u2019t walk. She uses a walker around the house and a scooter when she\u2019s outside.<\/p>\n

X-rays confirmed her hip is bone-on-bone, but joint replacement surgery hasn\u2019t been an option.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to get my hip replaced so I can walk again,\u201d explains Coleman. \u201cI\u2019ve seen three surgeons over the years, and they all said I couldn\u2019t have surgery because I was too heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first two doctors told her to lose weight, but they didn\u2019t do much to help.<\/p>\n

When she met with the third \u2014 MultiCare orthopedic surgeon Kevin Lawson, MD<\/a> \u2014 he had a solution. He recommended MultiCare\u2019s Center for Weight Loss & Wellness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Making the decision to have gastric bypass<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cWhen I met Dr. [Benedict] Hui at the Center for Weight Loss, we had a lengthy discussion to make sure surgery would work for me,\u201d she says. \u201cI came away from that appointment knowing surgery was the right thing for me to do and these were the right people to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Hui compared the different surgeries, and together they decided gastric bypass would be the right one for Coleman.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking the decision to have gastric bypass so that I could have hip replacement surgery gave me incentive, desire and the want to follow through,\u201d she says. \u201cI knew having surgery was my last chance to be able to walk again and to have a life.\u201d<\/p>\n

‘<\/strong>MultiCare has changed my life\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Coleman had gastric bypass surgery last July at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurgery went really well,\u201d she reports. \u201cI experienced very little pain and spent only one night in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says she can\u2019t say enough good things about Dr. Hui and the staff at the Center for Weight Loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are such good people and so thorough with everything,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was really happy at her first post-op visit,\u201d recalls Dr. Hui. \u201cShe had already lost 20 pounds, was feeling better and was looking forward to getting the joint replacement surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coleman has lost about 80 pounds since having surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at 220 right now. I haven\u2019t been at this weight in over 30 years,\u201d she says. \u201cMultiCare has changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Support when she needed it most<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Coleman joined MultiCare\u2019s weight loss support group on Facebook after she had surgery and found it to be a tremendous support.<\/p>\n

By reading other patients\u2019 experiences, she felt reassured what she was going through was normal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe surgery caused such a drastic change in my sense of taste,\u201d she explains. \u201cFood I used to enjoy no longer appealed to me. I struggled with finding the right protein. It was really difficult, but others in the support group gave me ideas and tips of what to try.\u201d<\/p>\n

No more GERD or incontinence<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Coleman suffered from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for years. Sometimes it was hard to breathe; other times, she would vomit.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy GERD was so bad at work one day,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI was on my way to the bathroom to throw up, but I didn\u2019t make it. It was the most humiliating thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was taking antacids and omeprazole every day, but now she doesn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n

Coleman also had problems with incontinence.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from my hip pain, incontinence was one of the biggest reasons I didn\u2019t go anywhere or do anything,\u201d she explains. \u201cNow I have no problems with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hip replacement \u2014 and dancing lessons \u2014 on the horizon<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Coleman is happy to report she has an upcoming appointment with Dr. Lawson, which means she can schedule hip replacement surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at a weight now that Dr. Lawson will do my replacement,\u201d she says. \u201cOnce I have surgery, I will be able to walk again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving surgery has been a life-changing journey,\u201d she adds. \u201cWhatever I have left in my life, I want to make it the best. I owe it to myself to do that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Being mobile means she can be more active and reach her goal weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live in a senior community with a pool and workout room; it\u2019s all right here,\u201d she says. \u201cThis will get me to my ultimate goal, which would be to lose another 40 pounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really life-changing surgery,\u201d Dr. Hui adds. \u201cPeople seem to think with obesity it\u2019s just numbers on a scale, but it\u2019s more than that; it affects your entire life. Those, like Vickie, who lose a significant amount of weight, are able to change their life and enjoy it more.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s looking forward to activities she has wanted to do but couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many things I missed out on in my life that I\u2019d like to do now,\u201d Coleman says. \u201cI want to take dancing lessons, attend my two grandsons\u2019 baseball and football games, and do the breast cancer walk with my friend from grade school.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019ll also be able to take her golden corgi, Ocean, out on walks without using a scooter.<\/p>\n

70 is the new 30<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Weight loss has not only changed Coleman\u2019s body \u2014 it has changed her outlook. She recalls staff at the Center for Weight Loss commenting on her upbeat, positive demeanor at her follow-up appointments after surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone at the clinic said, \u2018I don\u2019t remember seeing you like this!\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s true. I feel like I\u2019m me <\/em>again \u2014 the person I was all those years ago \u2014 and it shows!\u201d<\/p>\n

Coleman, who turns 70 in May, told a friend 70 is her new 30.<\/p>\n
