If you\u2019ve picked up your Sound to Narrows<\/a> race T-shirt or received water along the course, then chances are you\u2019ve been helped by Aileen Takara.<\/p>\n

For over five years, Aileen Takara, RN, has taken on different roles to help the annual Sound to Narrows road race.\u00a0 She\u2019s passed out water, welcomed runners across the finish line and registered new runners the morning of the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite part of volunteering is being with my fellow co-workers,\u201d Takara says.<\/p>\n

Each year, community members like Aileen Takara \u2014 who works for MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital \u2014 step up to provide the support that keeps race day running smoothly.<\/p>\n

From race registration to course monitors, cheer and water stations to finish-line greeters, volunteers are a big part of what makes this hometown race a fixture of the Tacoma community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI volunteer at the Sound to Narrows because I know it\u2019s usually a well-attended event and my help will definitely be needed,\u201d Takara says.<\/p>\n

Sound to Narrows relies on more than 300 volunteers each year. In 2025, volunteers gave over 1,000 hours of their time to make the event happen. These volunteer hours are a critical piece of the race\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

\u201cSound to Narrows is a vibrant gathering and healthy social event for our entire community,\u201d says Hope Roberts, MultiCare grants, contracts and events manager. \u201cThe event relies on our volunteers more than anything. I encourage anyone who is curious about the event to join us this year. I promise it will put a smile on your face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sound to Narrows is a community event that offers something for everyone, Roberts says. The hilly course and 12K distance provide a challenge for elite athletes, while 5K walkers of all skills and abilities find a welcoming environment.<\/p>\n

Even babies get their introduction to Sound to Narrows with the 20-yard diaper dash.<\/p>\n

The finish-line festival brings together race participants, along with volunteers and spectators, in a celebration of everything that makes Tacoma unique.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re running up that hill, tabling a booth, cheering on a friend or family member, or giving your time as a volunteer, you are part of the action,\u201d says Roberts.<\/p>\n

MultiCare nurses who participate in the GROW program may also receive credit (maximum four points) for their volunteer time at the Sound to Narrows.<\/p>\n

\u201cSound to Narrows allows me to diversify my portfolio and support my community in a different way,\u201d says Takara.<\/p>\n
