Arthur \u201cBunky\u201d Hill struggled with his weight his whole life, but being in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years kept him in shape.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my last few years of service, I had been gaining weight but still doing all the physical training associated with my job, which became increasingly difficult,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

During his last year in the military, Hill was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and began taking insulin and several other diabetes medications.<\/p>\n

He steadily gained about 70 pounds in the years following his 2002 retirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was unhealthy \u2014 I weighed 320 pounds, I had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,\u201d Hill shares. \u201cAnd my quality of life was not good. I wasn\u2019t active anymore. I tried all the fad diets, but nothing ever worked. I\u2019d had enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

He decided to look into weight loss surgery at MultiCare Rockwood Weight Loss & Bariatric Surgery Center<\/a> in summer 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took a seminar, which led to an intake appointment with Megan Vulcan (ARNP<\/a>),\u201d Hill explains. \u201cMegan told me I was a good candidate for surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

His surgery, performed by R. Andrew Bright, MD<\/a>, took place the week of Thanksgiving 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went home with all the new rules I had to live my life by \u2014 all the foods I could and couldn\u2019t eat,\u201d says Hill.<\/p>\n

All was going well until about a month after surgery, when a perforation formed and required surgical repair.<\/p>\n

Encountering setbacks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cBefore the perforation, I had just started adding a higher volume of food and more solids to my diet,\u201d Hill explains. \u201cAnd then I had to start all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he persevered and lost 80 pounds over the course of eight months.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy happy weight in the military was 220, so I was pleased with 240,\u201d Hill says.<\/p>\n

At the end of that year, he had to have his gallbladder removed. Despite needing another surgery, Hill says these setbacks didn\u2019t discourage him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore surgery, I was told about potential complications,\u201d he explains. \u201cI understand these things happen, and I have not had any problems since.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting off insulin was a \u2018game-changer\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of Hill\u2019s goals with surgery was to reduce the number of diabetes and blood pressure medications he was taking.<\/p>\n

\u201cBunky\u2019s A1c (blood sugar) was substantially elevated before surgery,\u201d Vulcan says. \u201cAfter surgery he had a really great improvement \u2014 his A1c went from 11 to six. He wouldn\u2019t have been able to do that with lifestyle changes alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because his A1c lowered, Hill could decrease his insulin intake.<\/p>\n

He maintained his weight for several years, but by spring 2022 had gained about 25 pounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was still healthier than before surgery,\u201d Hill says. \u201cBut I started getting discouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n

At his annual primary care visit that year, Hill told his doctor the weight was creeping back. His doctor suggested he could benefit from Ozempic because he has diabetes.<\/p>\n

Hill decided to try it. It improved his energy level, helped him shed the extra weight and reduced his blood pressure medications from three to one. And by February 2023, his doctor said he could stop taking insulin altogether.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was injecting insulin for 20 years, so it was a game-changer getting off of it,\u201d Hill says. \u201cMy feeling of well-being is the best it\u2019s ever been in my life. I look in the mirror and can tell I look better, I feel better and I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enjoying an active retirement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hill just turned 65 and says he\u2019s healthier than he\u2019s ever been.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have my energy back and the ability to hike and walk,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m as light as I was before I graduated high school!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy feeling of well-being is the best it\u2019s ever been in my life. I look in the mirror and can tell I look better, I feel better and I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hill\u2019s wife Lorraine recently retired, and they are enjoying retirement together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re able to do what good health affords you,\u201d he shares. \u201cWe travel, kayak and hike \u2014 we do all kinds of stuff. She\u2019s my biggest motivator.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor most people I see, it\u2019s not the number on a scale that brings them in; it\u2019s what they can\u2019t do,\u201d Vulcan says. \u201cEvery time I see Bunky, I hear about the latest adventure he\u2019s been on. He\u2019s doing all these things he couldn\u2019t do before surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hill credits Vulcan with helping him throughout his weight loss journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cMegan is intuitive and has a great way of explaining things. She\u2019s an incredible professional,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe follow-up at the center is for life, as long as you participate.
