April 3 is a bittersweet day for Lilly Reddy \u2014 it’s the anniversary of her daughter\u2019s death. Since 2006, it\u2019s a day she honors her daughter by donating toys to children in the hospital.<\/p>\n

However, after a recent medical emergency, April 3 now holds additional significance for Reddy \u2014 it\u2019s the date her colleagues at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center saved her life.<\/p>\n

A medical emergency in a \u2018fortunate\u2019 location<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Reddy is the medical receptionist at Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Pediatrics \u2013 Auburn. On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, she was eating lunch in the Auburn Medical Center cafeteria when she felt something was wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to eat my onion rings, but I kept missing my mouth,\u201d Reddy recalls. \u201cAnd then I tried drinking my Gatorade, but the bottle hit my eye twice. I was talking on the phone to my husband, telling him I didn’t feel well, and then I dropped my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reddy felt dizzy and didn\u2019t know what was happening, but John Morrison and Brittney White, clinical assistant nurse managers at Auburn Medical Center, did. They were in the cafeteria to have lunch with Myles Parilla, clinical director of Auburn\u2019s emergency department (ED), when they noticed Reddy\u2019s distress and need for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to eat my onion rings, but I kept missing my mouth. And then I tried drinking my Gatorade, but the bottle hit my eye twice. I was talking on the phone to my husband, telling him I didn’t feel well, and then I dropped my phone.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

White ran to get a wheelchair while Morrison assessed Reddy\u2019s condition and called a code blue, activating the rapid response team.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs nurses in the ED, your clinical senses are always there,\u201d Parilla says. \u201cThis was a good demonstration of using HRO (high reliability organization) behaviors in real time \u2014 recognizing that something was off and knowing they needed to take action. We have the duty to respond no matter where we\u2019re at.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she got the call about Reddy, Kelly DeHart, clinic manager of Auburn pediatric primary care, dropped what she was doing and went to be with Reddy until her husband got to the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hired Lilly last year and needed to make sure she was OK,\u201d DeHart says. \u201cLilly is family, and I\u2019ll do anything for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after the Auburn ED team stabilized Reddy, they transferred her to the MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital ICU for a higher level of care.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t usually see these things happen in the moment \u2014 we usually get the patients after the event,\u201d says White. \u201cIt was an unfortunate circumstance for her, but it was a very fortunate place for it to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teammates help keep Reddy\u2019s daughter\u2019s memory alive\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Reddy\u2019s daughter died April 3, 2006, at 21 years old. She loved animals and kids, so Reddy and her husband Parmanand volunteer at children\u2019s hospitals and donate toys to the patients every year.<\/p>\n

This helps Reddy remember her daughter while also bringing joy to kids in the hospital, she says.<\/p>\n

The Auburn pediatric primary care team knew about Reddy\u2019s plans for the toy donation. They didn\u2019t waste any time coordinating the donation this year as Reddy was recovering in the ICU.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur team decided that one tangible way to support Lilly during her recovery was to take over her toy donation,\u201d says DeHart. \u201cShe’s an amazing person who is caring, compassionate, always jumping in to help anyone \u2014 she’s the kind of employee that you just can\u2019t find anywhere anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

By Thursday afternoon, word had spread and donations started coming in \u2014 not only from those in Mary Bridge Children\u2019s primary care clinics, but also from leaders and employees around MultiCare who\u2019ve never met Reddy.<\/p>\n

Along with DeHart and the Auburn clinic team, Elizabeth Levenseller, regional manager for Mary Bridge Children\u2019s primary care, was determined to maximize donations toward Lilly\u2019s cause.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cOur team decided that one tangible way to support Lilly during her recovery was to take over her toy donation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They turned to One Team Mary Bridge \u2014 a culture and phrase commonly used across Mary Bridge Children\u2019s to describe the heart of working there.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne Team Mary Bridge is not only the amazing support that this entire team provides to one another during times of success, but also in times of need, such as now for our valued team member Lilly,\u201d Levenseller says.<\/p>\n

In less than 24 hours, DeHart received more than $800 for toys to donate in Reddy\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed by the response from my team, my colleagues and even from strangers who\u2019ve heard about this.\u201d \"Blonde<\/p>\n

DeHart shopped over the weekend and brought the first trunkful of toys to Mary Bridge Children\u2019s on Tuesday, April 9. Between the first shopping trip and drop-off, an additional $500 was raised.<\/p>\n

DeHart continues to accept donations and will make additional shopping trips and deliveries to Mary Bridge Children\u2019s through the end of April.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I want is for Lilly to take care of herself and make a full recovery,\u201d says DeHart. \u201cI can\u2019t thank my colleagues at Auburn enough for being so observant, for acting quickly and for saving Lilly\u2019s life \u2014 I just want to give them all a giant hug.\u201d<\/p>\n
