But being overweight can actually hinder those who need knee surgery from qualifying for it.<\/p>\n<p>This was the case for Gretchen Dolan, 57, of Graham, who struggled with her weight for 30 years and suffered from debilitating knee pain for five years. Her limited mobility affected her quality of life, and the extra weight kept her from having knee replacement surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy knee was so bad, if I went to a big store like Costco, I had to use a scooter,\u201d says Dolan. \u201cI felt like people were looking at me thinking, \u2018She\u2019s too lazy to walk.\u2019 It was the worst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tried to lose the weight on her own but couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only dropped about 30 pounds, which wasn\u2019t enough,\u201d she says. \u201cI knew if I wanted to get my knee replaced, I\u2019d first need to have bariatric surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dolan met with bariatric surgeon <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/provider\/michael-r-keating\/\">Michael Keating, MD<\/a>, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/covington-medical-center\/center-for-weight-loss-wellness-covington\/\">MultiCare Center for Weight Loss &amp; Wellness \u2013 Covington<\/a> in June 2022 to discuss her options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Keating immediately made me comfortable,\u201d Dolan shares. \u201cHe told me we were going to be a team, and I knew he meant that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her first appointment with Dr. Keating took place in his office, not an exam room, and lasted an hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever in my life have I had that type of time commitment with a doctor before,\u201d Dolan says. \u201cIt was all just talking; no poking and prodding.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDr. Keating immediately made me comfortable. He told me we were going to be a team, and I knew he meant that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Once she made the decision to have <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/services\/weight-loss\/bariatric-surgery\/#pattern2_1\">gastric bypass surgery<\/a>, she consulted with the clinic dietitian, who had her follow a version of the Mediterranean diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was able to steer me in the right direction if I went off the path,\u201d she recalls. \u201cShe helped me stay motivated and interested by offering alternative suggestions for meals. That made a big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dolan lost 25 pounds over five months and was able to lower her BMI so she could have gastric bypass surgery that November.<\/p>\n<p>She says the most impactful aspects of surgery for her were restricted portion sizes and meal frequency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all the dieting I\u2019ve done in my life, it was never \u2018eat more often,\u2019 it was \u2018eat less often,\u2019\u201d Dolan explains. \u201cThis was a complete flip, and it works so much better for me. I can only physically eat a tiny amount at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Living the active lifestyle she always wanted<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Having lost 75 pounds, Dolan was able to get the knee replacement surgery she so badly needed.<\/p>\n<p>Once she fully recovered from that surgery, she started living the active lifestyle she desired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always wanted to learn yoga, so I started doing yoga,\u201d Dolan says. \u201cMy husband Mike and I also went on a trip to national parks and did a lot of hiking together.\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-33869 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Woman and man stand in front of Transformers figure Universal Studios &lt;Caption&gt; Dolan with husband Mike at Universal Studios\" width=\"226\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/05\/Gretchen-and-Mike-Dolan_universal-studios-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a goal of hers to visit Disneyland and Universal Studios. She and Mike made the trip to celebrate her newfound mobility following both surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe covered 33 miles over four days, and it was no problem for me at all,\u201d Dolan says. \u201cThere\u2019s no way I would have even attempted that before surgery; I knew physically I couldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She and her husband continue to visit Cancun every year, but now she\u2019s able to enjoy the trip in new ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an especially fun trip after surgery because not only was I able to take longer walks, I could also walk on the beach,\u201d Dolan says. \u201cThat\u2019s something I didn\u2019t do before surgery, since walking in sand is difficult. It snowballed for her to a lot of success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dolan has lost a total of 150 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started at 288; I\u2019m now 138,\u201d she shares. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m talking about someone else when I say that.
