For as long as Danielle Depew can remember, she\u2019s felt sad.<\/p>\n

In school, she struggled to make friends and feel like she belonged. Yet Depew always waved her parents away when they asked what was wrong. As the oldest of four sisters, she considered these feelings to be her own problem, not something to burden others with.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been someone that felt like I need to take care of people \u2014 not someone that could be taken care of,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

Asking for help<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In December 2022, Depew\u2019s life turned upside down with the unexpected dissolution of her marriage. She found herself facing a divorce and the prospect of sharing custody of her 3-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n

Her oft-ignored mental health took a nosedive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d wake up in the morning and be like, \u2018I don\u2019t want to be here,\u2019\u201d she remembers. \u201cThat became my baseline. It\u2019s a tough place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Needing help, Depew went to her doctor at MultiCare Tacoma Family Medicine for a therapy referral. He asked if she\u2019d be interested in collaborative care \u2014 a donor-supported model that offers mental health treatment within the primary care setting.<\/p>\n

The integrated approach would allow her doctor and MultiCare Behavioral Health therapist Alexis Schleiss, MSW, LICSW, to provide synchronized care rather than sending her to an outside practice.<\/p>\n

To Depew, this sounded like a \u201cgenius idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving that readiness and accessibility and connection with your physical and mental health \u2026 it\u2019s being treated like you’re a whole person,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Lifesaving intervention<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A month later, with treatment still taking shape, the weight of Depew\u2019s impending reality became too much. She decided she wanted to take her life.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Depew\u2019s then-husband \u2014 a police officer \u2014 and two other first-responder friends intervened before tragedy struck and rushed her to MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital\u2019s emergency department.<\/p>\n

After three days there, she moved to inpatient care, followed by an intensive outpatient program. When Depew left the hospital, she was comforted that Schleiss already knew her story and could help navigate life afterward.<\/p>\n

Schleiss remembers the relief she felt after learning Depew was safe. From then on, her patient\u2019s commitment to treatment was remarkable.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s just made such great progress,\u201d Schleiss remarks.<\/p>\n

Finding strength to move forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Over the next few months, Depew continued therapy with Schleiss. She also found solace in her family and friends, who stepped in to help her adjust to her new life.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, it took that experience to really realize how close of a connection I had made with the people in my life, and they care enough about me that they really genuinely were there to help me,\u201d Depew reflects.<\/p>\n

After continuing to work on her health, she woke up one day and noticed a change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just like \u2018I\u2019m fine, I\u2019m OK,\u2019\u201d Depew shares. \u201cFor someone who, every morning, was waking up preferring that they didn\u2019t, being OK was like \u2026 \u2018This is great.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Her experience has also taught her a lasting lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s OK to ask for help,\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re weak. It actually means you\u2019re strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being there for others<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Depew\u2019s journey has inspired her to pursue a new professional goal: becoming a firefighter. After completing ride-alongs, passing tests and interviewing, she was recently offered a position with a local fire department.<\/p>\n

Knowing how fortunate she was to have first responders nearby during her crisis, Depew now wants to be there for others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can show up to a call on someone\u2019s worst day and be like, \u2018I\u2019ve been here \u2026 it can get better,\u2019\u201d she explains. \u201cHopefully I can change someone\u2019s life in ways that maybe I needed.\u201d \"Woman<\/p>\n

Today, Depew is open about sharing even her most vulnerable moments, especially if it helps someone else overcome bias and begin treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel no shame in my story,\u201d she says. \u201cMy story is just a part of who I am. It’s a part of my evolution. It’s part of who I’m becoming.\u201d<\/p>\n

The importance of access to care<\/span><\/h2>\n

Community generosity helps fund increased access to behavioral health services through collaborative care. Donors allow clinics to embed mental health support, provide therapists and psychiatric consultations, and offer more patients treatment every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to have programs in place so people can get the support needed,\u201d Depew says. \u201cNot everyone’s as lucky as me to have their at-home support system.
