{"id":34685,"date":"2024-08-22T07:00:40","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T07:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=34685"},"modified":"2024-11-08T21:33:56","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T21:33:56","slug":"new-lacey-er-proves-value-of-local-emergency-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/new-lacey-er-proves-value-of-local-emergency-care\/","title":{"rendered":"New Lacey ER proves value of local emergency care","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Dec. 5, 2023, Jeff Cook stood at the <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/newsroom\/2023\/12\/multicare-opens-state-of-the-art-neighborhood-emergency-department-in-lacey\/\">ribbon-cutting ceremony<\/a> for the new MultiCare neighborhood emergency room (ER) in Lacey and marveled.<\/p>\n<p>Ten exam rooms, an in-house lab, on-site radiology services and around-the-clock staffing. Such excellent care was now available in his new neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Little did Cook know that in four short weeks he would be back to visit again. This time as a patient.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A rich MultiCare history<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cook\u2019s connection to MultiCare started with his wife Becky Walsh, who graduated from the Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing (supported by MultiCare Health Foundation) in 1969. For years, they attended the annual alumnae luncheon and donated to the scholarship fund.<\/p>\n<p>After more than four decades as a critical care nurse, Walsh retired and the couple established The Becky Walsh and Jeff Cook Endowment for Nursing Excellence. The fund will help MultiCare nurses pursue education and develop critical skills on the job now and into the future, thanks to their legacy gift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love nurses,\u201d Cook explains. \u201cThey\u2019re the backbone of health care.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34689 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Man and woman posing in a yard.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/08\/Walsh_2.jpg 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most recently, the couple moved to a Lacey retirement community right as MultiCare acquired Olympia-based Capital Medical Center. Cook and Walsh have been taking the time to learn more about the health system\u2019s footprint in the Puget Sound region through tours at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital, Wellfound Behavioral Health Hospital and MultiCare Capital Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been impressed with the places we\u2019ve toured,\u201d he shares.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Emergency care close to home<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the early morning hours of Jan. 2, 2024, Cook woke to discomfort on his right side. While his wife slept, he slowly walked around the house until the pain grew too much to bear. Cook finally roused her at 5am in need of immediate emergency care.<\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival at <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/multicare-capital-medical-center-emergency-lacey\/\">MultiCare Emergency &#8211; Lacey<\/a> less than a mile from their home, Cook was promptly admitted, had his vitals checked, received a CT scan, met William Hurley, MD, and was diagnosed with a kidney stone in his right ureter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had everything,\u201d he says of the Lacey ER. \u201cAll the staff, Dr. Hurley. Everything was there that one could need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cook received medications for his pain and nausea, along with a few prescriptions. He was discharged later that morning, and the kidney stone successfully passed. While Cook\u2019s visit was short, it left a lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expected to get good care,\u201d he explains. \u201cBut it was just an exceptional experience. I think we\u2019re really blessed to have that facility there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lasting importance of local care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cook\u2019s emergency visit has given him a new perspective on MultiCare\u2019s mission of partnering for healing and a healthy future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I liked was we got to have the MultiCare experience, since we\u2019d never done that before,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd it turned out we were at the place we had the ribbon cutting. That was like icing on the cake.
