It\u2019s Monday morning at MultiCare Capital Women\u2019s Integrated Primary Care<\/a>, and a small group of women arrive in the donor-dedicated Marcus Family Health Education Room.<\/p>\n

They reconnect while grabbing a nutritious snack, then find a seat in the circle. Local artwork adorns the walls<\/a>, adding to the warm, upbeat atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Each woman is here because she\u2019s made a commitment to her health.<\/p>\n

Allison Imel, PA-C, FNTP<\/a>, a physician assistant specializing in urogynecology and lifestyle medicine, speaks up, and another women\u2019s metabolic wellness cohort begins.<\/p>\n

A vision for women\u2019s health<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When the clinic opened in July 2023<\/a> \u2014 made possible in part by generous community support \u2014 Imel was captivated by the commitment to Angela J. Bowen\u2019s vision, the pioneering doctor and women\u2019s rights advocate who helped establish Capital Medical Center in 1985.<\/p>\n

Five months later, Imel joined the urogynecology team with the goal of creating an intentional space where community, education and health could intertwine.<\/p>\n

Shortly after, she launched the clinic\u2019s first women\u2019s metabolic wellness program \u2014 focused on reaching healthy levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and body composition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intention is to educate and empower women,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe’re trying to decrease cardiovascular risk by addressing the foundations of optimal wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patients join the program through a primary care referral. Over 12 weeks, eight to 10 women meet for six group sessions with personal health check-ins and a topical lecture to generate discussion. Nutrition and movement are regular themes.<\/p>\n

On off weeks, Imel meets one-on-one with members \u2014 like Joan Francis \u2014 to discuss their goals and barriers to reaching them.<\/p>\n

Health care in a new home<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Born in Jamaica, Francis moved to New Jersey in 1986 and spent decades as a family nurse practitioner. In 2017, she retired early due to her declining health.<\/p>\n

When Francis later arrived in Washington state to live with her daughter\u2019s family, she had difficulty finding a primary care provider \u2014 particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

After waiting months to see family medicine physician L. Abigail Tan, MD<\/a>, her routine lab work showed several potential health risks.<\/p>\n

Francis was intrigued when Dr. Tan recommended she attend a wellness class at the clinic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea that someone would be talking to me directly about my problems and in a group setting \u2026 I was very excited,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n

Lighting a fire<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Francis joined the clinic\u2019s first cohort and immediately connected with Imel\u2019s passion and expertise.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s so gung-ho,\u201d Francis says. \u201cYou ask her about anything, and she can tell you the big picture down to the small cellular level. She gave me good advice, like \u2018Don’t focus on the diagnosis\u2019 and \u2018Focus on what you can do to get better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonding with other health-conscious women also filled a void in Francis\u2019 life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I was moving a lot, I didn’t make many new friends,\u201d she shares. \u201cSo, to sit in a classroom with other women my age was very appealing. They can give you their perspective on something that you may not have gone through yet but will experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imel specifically prioritizes connection and openness, recognizing social isolation\u2019s negative influence on health. Patients often bond quickly, stay late after class and remain in touch once sessions end (Francis\u2019 cohort gathered for the first-ever reunion last month).<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much value and richness in not going at it alone, and having your experience validated through another\u2019s and hearing someone be like, \u2018Yeah, me too,\u2019\u201d Imel says.<\/p>\n

As Francis incorporated Imel\u2019s teachings throughout her cohort journey, her health kept improving. Today, she remains committed to continuing that trajectory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has changed me,\u201d Francis reflects. \u201cIt\u2019s made me more determined to do what I need to do and given me steps to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sustaining success<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now hosting its third cohort, the program has already had a significant impact on participants\u2019 lives. As indicated by routine lab work at the start and end of the 12 weeks, nearly all see immediate improvements to biomarkers like inflammation, insulin, fat and lean body mass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI celebrate with them, and I get excited, but I’m never surprised,\u201d Imel explains. \u201cYou regulate your nervous system, heal your gut, clean up your diet, move your body, and you\u2019ll reverse disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ultimate goal, she stresses, is to empower women to sustain what they learn beyond the cohort\u2019s final week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a weight-loss program,\u201d Imel says. \u201cThis is an education program; this is a community-building program. What our success really depends on is opening people\u2019s hearts \u2026 so they feel safe and can get to the core of why they\u2019re not doing the things they know promote health.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can live well,\u201d she continues. \u201cYou can go and hike and be with your grandchildren and you can feel joy. That’s really what it’s about.\u201d<\/p>\n

A community\u2019s impact<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Community generosity has already played a large role in the Olympia clinic\u2019s young history. Donors helped open its doors and deliver on the vision of becoming \u201ca medical home\u201d for local women<\/a>. Philanthropy continues to power new initiatives and ensure staff can keep up with enthusiastic demand for services.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only reason we even have a place to gather is because of MultiCare Capital Foundation,\u201d Imel says.<\/p>\n

Clinic staff, leadership and patients are excited about what the future could hold for their Thurston County region with additional donor support.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want MultiCare to continue to be known as the hospital system that cares about people and reaches the community,\u201d Francis shares. \u201cSo, we need donors to continue giving to this worthy cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
