Lois Cruikshank is an active volunteer who enjoys gardening and traveling. But the arthritis in the 84-year-old\u2019s knees was starting to take its toll on her ability to do the activities she enjoys.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love to travel; I\u2019m always on the go,\u201d she says. \u201cBut my knees started hurting while walking, and at night I\u2019d roll over and my knees would be in pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both of Cruikshank\u2019s knees are bone on bone, meaning she has advanced osteoarthritis and not much, if any, cartilage left to provide cushion for her joints.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt got to the point where Biofreeze and I were best friends,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhen I wasn\u2019t able to do quite as much because of the pain, I decided to see if it was time for surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cruikshank turned to orthopedic surgeon Nicholas Kennedy, MD<\/a>, with MultiCare Orthopedics Northwest to discuss knee replacement surgery. She was worried her age might interfere with having surgery, but Dr. Kennedy assured her it wasn\u2019t an issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lucked out that I was able to get in with Dr. Kennedy. I heard he did his residency at Mayo Clinic, so I knew he would be up on the newest procedures,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cARVIS allows me to further increase my accuracy when performing surgery and customize my surgical plans. This truly enables me to individualize each patient\u2019s care.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She was right. Dr. Kennedy says he\u2019s always looking for ways to improve patient outcomes, whether that be with new techniques or advancements in technology.<\/p>\n

For knee replacement surgeries, he uses an augmented reality technology called ARVIS\u00ae<\/sup>. ARVIS (augmented reality visualization and information system) is a wearable device that helps surgeons place and align implants during surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cARVIS allows me to further increase my accuracy when performing surgery and customize my surgical plans,\u201d Dr. Kennedy says. \u201cThis truly enables me to individualize each patient\u2019s care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before surgery, Dr. Kennedy places landmarks on the patient\u2019s knee, which serve as a map of their unique anatomy.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring surgery, real-time data are delivered to me through a headset,\u201d he explains. \u201cThis helps me visualize the best placement and fit of the implant.\u201d<\/p>\n

This precision translates to less pain after the procedure and shorter recovery times.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy surgery was at 8am, and I was home by 1pm,\u201d says Cruikshank. \u201cEverything went really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been six months since surgery and she feels great. She\u2019s gardening and taking trips with her local senior center.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no pain whatsoever, and I walk normally,\u201d she says. \u201cSince surgery, I\u2019ve gone with the group to Leavenworth to see the Sound of Music and took a trolley tour of the waterfalls at the Columbia Gorge.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
