Eric Spero-Hoy.<\/p>\n<p>The couple had planned to start renovating their new home and acquaint themselves with their new community, but three days later, Rachel began to bleed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Life in the NICU<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_35093\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35093\" class=\"wp-image-35093 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mother holding new born baby.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/2.jpg 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel holds her 5-day-old daughter for the first time.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rachel rushed to nearby MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital where she was diagnosed with placental abruption, a complication that occurs when the placenta separates from the uterine wall before birth.<\/p>\n<p>Surgery brought her baby, at 26 weeks gestation, into the world. Minutes after first meeting, Rachel\u2019s tiny daughter was transported to MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital\u2019s Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/childrens-hospital\/hospital-care\/neonatal-intensive-care-unit-nicu\/\">now part of MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel remained at Good Samaritan for several days, healing before she reunited with her newborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I could see her in the NICU, my blood pressure stabilized,\u201d Rachel remembers. \u201cShe was there for three months, as she had to grow, and she really struggled with her lungs. Every day it was just showing up, learning more, supporting her where I could; it was all very much a blur thinking, \u2018We have to get discharged; we have to get her healthy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A guiding light in Parenting Partnership<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Like many in her shoes, Rachel believed that leaving the NICU would mark the end of her family\u2019s trying journey. But life post-discharge held its own set of difficulties, like learning to monitor her baby\u2019s oxygen, keeping her weight up and ensuring she stayed healthy.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when MaryAnn Fortunato, MSW, LICSW, a family support social worker at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/patients-visitors\/patient-family-support-services\/parenting-partnership\/\">Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Parenting Partnership<\/a>, entered the picture. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35099 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Family posing with new born baby.\" width=\"219\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/1.jpg 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cParenting Partnership is a home visitation support program that helps families manage the challenges and joys of the first three years of life after leaving the NICU with their baby,\u201d Fortunato explains. \u201cOur goal is to strengthen attachment through attentiveness to cues, assure a safe environment for baby and strengthen parents\u2019 understanding of child development given their child\u2019s medical complexities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1998, the program includes accompanying families to medical appointments and procedures; assisting with accessing developmental services; addressing questions about feeding, weight gain and medical concerns; being a listening ear and advocate; and offering peer support groups.<\/p>\n<p>With about half of its operating budget funded by generous <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/our-foundations\/mary-bridge-childrens-foundation\/\">Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Foundation<\/a> donors, Parenting Partnership is available at no cost to families .In those early weeks,<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was overwhelmed by all she was expected to balance \u2014 there simply weren\u2019t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything. Fortunato immediately became a steady, reassuring presence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just remember MaryAnn telling me, \u2018You can do this \u2014 it\u2019s not going to be like this forever, and you don\u2019t have to do it all perfectly,\u2019\u201d Rachel shares. \u201cAnd I felt the weight release from me \u2014 I don\u2019t think I could have ever told myself that and believed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The first three years<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over the next three years, Fortunato met Rachel where she was \u2014 virtually to begin, in person post-pandemic and monthly toward the end. She was present for many of Rachel\u2019s daughter\u2019s milestones, including some of her first steps, and built a relationship with the entire family.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35095\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35095\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35095\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/3-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mother and father holding baby carrier.\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/3-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/3-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/3-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/09\/3.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Discharging from the NICU.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cRachel is a wonderfully attentive, caring and engaged mother who is open to being vulnerable and receptive to the support offered,\u201d Fortunato says. \u201cTogether, Rachel and her husband Eric demonstrate a strong commitment to their daughter\u2019s well-being, creating a nurturing and loving environment for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunato also connected Rachel with Postpartum Support International, which in turn set her up with a therapist specializing in supporting NICU families, as well as navigating postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Rachel credits Fortunato with serving as a springboard to her PTSD recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a PTSD specialist, I know that the number-one thing that keeps people from recovering is avoidance, and when you have medical trauma, the desire to hide and not go to appointments is really, really strong,\u201d Rachel explains. \u201cBy going to these appointments with me, MaryAnn was a therapeutic intervention to reduce that avoidance. I knew I was going to have a trusted, safe person with me who would be a second set of ears, who would be there to help me advocate if I faltered and who had my best interest at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A \u2018de facto community\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After her NICU and Parenting Partnership experience, Rachel has been inspired to expand her career focus from combat trauma to birth and medical trauma, helping others on similar journeys.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also grateful for the support of a \u201cde facto community\u201d of donors she\u2019d never even met, at a time when her family hadn\u2019t yet established roots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received diapers and wipes and gift cards multiple times throughout our time in the program, and it felt like a gift for just existing,\u201d Rachel shares. \u201cIt was just such a blessing to know that there were people who cared enough about where we were in our lives, and the struggle that we were going through, to give us that gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunato echoes Rachel\u2019s thankfulness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParenting Partnership would like to thank donors for their willingness to support the medically fragile infants and their vulnerable families in our community,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve witnessed amazing outcomes with families over the years because of their generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Sept. 7, 2021, trauma psychologist and expectant mother Rachel Spero-Hoy, PhD, moved to Puyallup, Washington, with active-duty Army husband Maj.
