Substance use disorder professional (SUDP) Illyana Davis knows what it\u2019s like to be in her clients\u2019 shoes. Having just celebrated 12 years of being substance-free, her experience helps build trust with others beginning their recovery journeys.<\/p>\n

\u201cAddiction is a big giant storm,\u201d Davis explains. \u201cI always say, \u2018We\u2019re in the same storm, just different boats.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She never imagined that her boat would arrive back at the MultiCare Behavioral Health SUD program \u2014 supported by donations through MultiCare Behavioral Health Foundation \u2014 where she now works and once sought treatment herself.<\/p>\n

Rediscovering joy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Davis still remembers her motivation to start on the path toward recovery. During an inpatient stay for a methamphetamine use disorder that began at age 18, an impromptu karaoke session with her roommates dissolved into silliness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sounded like dying dogs,\u201d Davis recalls. \u201cI laughed so hard that my belly hurt. Then I started crying because I was laughing so hard \u2026 which was a weird feeling that I hadn\u2019t felt in a very long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re in addiction, your capacity for joy is gone,\u201d she continues. \u201cOne of the many reasons why I can’t go back to using is because I love feeling happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis\u2019 epiphany led her to enroll in MultiCare Behavioral Health SUD outpatient treatment, where she met SUDP Dave Kraut.<\/p>\n

Transformative bonds<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From the moment Davis attended group sessions and individual counseling with Kraut, they clicked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a phenomenal counselor,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was just very comforting and honest, and it kept me coming back.\u201d \"Woman<\/p>\n

Kraut noticed Davis\u2019 commitment to recovery early on as she developed a support system and started embracing new coping skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cIllyana came in with a very positive outlook and very high energy,\u201d Kraut says. \u201cShe was ready to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Davis progressed, Kraut connected her with housing and health care resources, as well as financial assistance to regain stability.<\/p>\n

After graduating, Davis returned at Kraut\u2019s invitation to assist with new support groups. In this setting, he saw her passion for helping others, and he encouraged Davis to consider pursuing a career in the field.<\/p>\n

Four years later, after completing her degree and supervised experience requirements, she became certified as a recovery professional.<\/p>\n

From client to colleague<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 2023, Davis accepted a job with donor-supported Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare, which \u2014 along with MultiCare Behavioral Health \u2014 comprises MultiCare\u2019s South Sound SUD program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started, I asked, \u2018Hey, does that guy Dave still work here?\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cNow, we work right across the hall from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her current role, Davis conducts walk-in assessments to help new clients get started with services. Kraut is now the program\u2019s clinical supervisor, and they collaborate often.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s been a wonderful person to work with and learn from,\u201d Davis says. \u201cIt\u2019s a really cool roundabout moment that I don’t think happens for a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having Davis as a colleague not only reminds Kraut of the enduring hope in recovery, but she also inspires him with her heart for everyone they serve.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s eager to see people recover,\u201d Kraut says. \u201cShe genuinely wants to meet people where they are, build them up, encourage them and open the door for them to walk through. We\u2019re lucky to have her as part of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis is grateful to be providing the same welcoming, person-centered care that she experienced years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrograms like ours that offer that door to hope are so essential,\u201d she shares. \u201cThe beauty is they’re there for you when you\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stepping up for those in need<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Amid high nationwide rates of mental health challenges and SUD, the need for compassionate behavioral health care has never been greater. Championing programs and services that lead to recovery begins with recognizing the humanity in everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always want to come with that lens of seeing the person and not the addiction,\u201d Kraut explains.<\/p>\n

Donors play an important part. MultiCare South Sound SUD is supported by community generosity through MultiCare Behavioral Health Foundation, which helps expand clients\u2019 access to care and sustain life-changing treatment options.<\/p>\n
