Support services like peer groups and youth bereavement camp are offered at no cost to families, thanks to donations through Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his Bridges experience, Brunner remembers learning how even after death, the person lives on with their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still recall that first Christmas \u2014 making Christmas ornaments and doing things around specific holidays to help solidify that,\u201d he shares. \u201cThey\u2019re gone, but they&#8217;re still in your memories. They&#8217;re still with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Connecting with community<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Bridges program also gifted Brunner with his Feelie Heart, providing something tangible for him to hold onto in his grief. Today, he uses it as a connection point with the community he serves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows the human side of us in law enforcement,\u201d Brunner explains. \u201cWe do have the same raw emotions around tragedy that everybody else does.\u201d In fact, he frequently reaches out to Bridges for additional Feelie Hearts to pass on to the public and share about their available resources. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35695 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/feelie-hearts-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Handcrafted felt hearts in different colors\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/feelie-hearts-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/feelie-hearts-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/feelie-hearts-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/feelie-hearts.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently we had a tragic fatality accident in my district,\u201d Brunner says. \u201cA community was impacted, as well as three families where three children died on scene and so did one of the mothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that wreck, I\u2019ve kind of grown a little bit with the family, and I shared my testament to them, gave them the hearts and told them about Bridges,\u201d he continues. \u201cAll three families have surviving children, and knowing where to get help was a relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A testament of donor impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bridges has served over 12,000 children from more than 6,100 families since 1988, helping them process, cope and heal. From day one, these vital services have been free because of community generosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty years later, I\u2019m a testament to those donors,\u201d Brunner says. \u201cStill to this day I carry that heart, and I still provide guidance to families at work.
