Quitting on her own wasn\u2019t taking, and Schuster knew she needed help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself, \u2018Finding a program will give me the start I need to push myself to quit,\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Schuster began contacting nearby treatment centers, but no one had the space for an immediate enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>On a whim, she called the donor-supported Substance Treatment and Recovery Training (START) inpatient unit at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital, just 20 minutes away from her home in Tacoma. Someone picked up after one ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said they had beds available \u2026 and if I wanted to, I could begin that same day,\u201d Schuster remembers. \u201cI said, \u2018Give me two hours, and I\u2019ll be there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Offering a lifeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since 2022, START has served pregnant and postpartum patients seeking to address their substance use disorder. The unit offers prenatal care, medical detoxification and stabilization, chemical dependency treatment, social support, counseling and aftercare coordination, all with a nonjudgmental, patient-centered approach.<\/p>\n<p>MultiCare Good Samaritan Foundation donors play a critical role in ensuring that expecting parents can access comprehensive care specifically tailored to their needs. Donated funds also go toward providing on-unit activities and wraparound resources.<\/p>\n<p>The program is one of only a few in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of our patients experience stigma around their substance use, which impacts their access to prenatal care and can make them afraid because they know there\u2019s a good chance they\u2019ll be judged in the health care system for their use,\u201d explains Mary Buswell, MD, addiction medicine fellow. \u201cThat puts them in a dangerous place, where they&#8217;re actually not getting the prenatal care they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see time and time again people who are working so hard in treatment are amazing parents,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Recovery done right<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On Nov. 8, 2024, Schuster was admitted for a 26-day inpatient stay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time before I\u2019ve gone to treatment, it was forced on me,\u201d she says. \u201cI knew if I didn\u2019t do it my own way, then it probably wasn\u2019t going to last \u2026 I was super determined to get it right this time.\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37157 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/ashley-start-poster-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"Poster\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/ashley-start-poster-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/ashley-start-poster.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Schuster was met by numerous attentive, compassionate providers who walked hand-in-hand with her through each step of the program, from medications to mental health support. Nurses like Jenilee Thiederman and counselors like Kathi Wire made a quick and lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou feel like you\u2019ve known everyone for years because of how amazing they are and how close you get with them so fast,\u201d Schuster shares. \u201cThey definitely care about you, and I think that\u2019s what makes the biggest difference when it comes to being on the patient side of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her own recovery, she began taking on a big-sister role with other patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshley was very focused on her own treatment, but she also was always really engaged in supporting other people in the program,\u201d Dr. Buswell reflects. \u201cShe was very beloved by our nursing team and our counselors because of the way she brought other people in.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An unexpected transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Schuster completed her START stay on Dec. 5, then reunited with her aunt and 7-year-old son Cameron. She expected to enroll in follow-up residential treatment for the remainder of her pregnancy, but a routine ultrasound changed those plans. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37159 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_Cameron-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mom and son on a beach.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_Cameron-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_Cameron-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_Cameron-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_Cameron.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Doctors told Schuster she was at severe risk for a preterm delivery \u2014 more than three months before her due date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a big shock,\u201d she says. \u201cThe next thing I know, I\u2019m being told I need to go to (MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital) immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With little time to process this new reality, she called her START family, where she\u2019d continued to receive weekly outpatient care. Dr. Buswell calmly walked Schuster through what to expect and helped settle her nerves about temporarily transitioning care away from Good Samaritan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think those bonds that she made during treatment have been so supportive afterward for her to be able to continue to reach out and lean on her support team to help when things get really hard,\u201d Dr. Buswell shares.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 21, Schuster gave birth to her son Jaxson, who weighed less than 2 pounds and was admitted to MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital\u2019s neonatal intensive care unit. She\u2019s a regular visitor as Jaxson continues to grow, thanks to expert, around-the-clock care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone there is pretty stinking amazing,\u201d Schuster says. \u201cThe nurses are so awesome, and he\u2019s making such good progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Grateful for compassionate care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Schuster knows the value of having unwavering support in recovery. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37161 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_keys-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Woman holding keys.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_keys-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_keys-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_keys-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/05\/Ashley_keys.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re doing it on your own and not having help \u2026 it\u2019s a lot, lot harder,\u201d she shares. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t find the START program, I honestly don\u2019t know if I would have made it through any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schuster was recently approved for housing assistance to help move into her own place. In March, she attended a field trip with her Cameron\u2019s class to the Tacoma Nature Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to be there for him \u2026 and make him happy and fill his cup, it definitely fills mine,\u201d Schuster reflects. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely taken a lot of work to finally get to where I\u2019m at right now, but it\u2019s so worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by her patient\u2019s strength and resilient spirit, Dr. Buswell is thankful to live in a community that generously gives back to critical health care programs like START.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout that support, we wouldn&#8217;t be able to offer the amazing program that we have,\u201d she explains. \u201cInvestment in programs like this is so important, because it\u2019s serving and providing for some of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the day she first called the inpatient unit, Schuster\u2019s gratitude has grown exponentially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t express enough how amazing everybody at the START program is, from the beginning of my time to the very end and afterwards,\u201d she shares. \u201cWhen I say they saved my life, they really did.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ashley Schuster credits one phone call with saving her life.
