That means longer days, more time outside and a break from those heavy jackets.<\/p>\n<p>But it also means temperatures are spiking, and for many people, that means being stuck \u00a0looking for creative ways to stay cool at home without air conditioning.<\/p>\n<h2>Stay cool for your health<\/h2>\n<p>Keeping cool during the summer months is important for more than just your comfort, though \u2014 it&#8217;s also key to your health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions such as heat cramps, exhaustion and stroke are all possible when you experience abnormal or prolonged heat and humidity without relief or adequate fluid intake. You may also find yourself experiencing more headaches, nausea or fatigue during times of excessive heat.<\/p>\n<p>Some preexisting conditions may put you at greater risk for heat related-illness, including heart, lung or kidney disease, poor circulation, and high blood pressure. Certain medication may also increase your risk. Be cautious and talk with your doctor or other health care provider before the heat hits if you have any of these conditions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Our beat-the-heat tricks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Not everyone is lucky enough to have air conditioning at home, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to sweat it out. Next time temperatures rise, give one of these tricks a try:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place a <strong>bowl of ice<\/strong> in front of your fan to drop the temperature of the air it&#8217;s circulating<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your <strong>ceiling fan is moving counterclockwise<\/strong> to ensure air is being pushed down<\/li>\n<li>Try a <strong>cooling sheet<\/strong> on your bed or place your sheet in the freezer ahead of bedtime<\/li>\n<li>Keep plenty of water and other electrolyte drinks stocked to <strong>stay hydrated<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid cooking inside<\/strong> and instead fire up the grill, or go for cold dishes like sandwiches or salads<\/li>\n<li>Heat rises, so <strong>stay low<\/strong> by moving your mattress to the floor or taking a break on the cold kitchen floor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unplug unneeded electronics and appliances<\/strong> (yes, they still generate heat even when idle)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be wary of swamp coolers<\/strong>, which can make the room less bearable in humid conditions<\/li>\n<li>Take a <strong>cool shower or bath <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Open and close your windows strategically<\/strong> \u2014 open at night and create a cross breeze, then close before the sun comes back up<\/li>\n<li>Keep windows covered when in direct sunlight using <strong>heavy shades, blinds or curtains<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Stick to <strong>light-colored, natural clothing<\/strong>, such as cotton, that allows for more breathability<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go somewhere that has air conditioning<\/strong> for a break, such as the movie theater, mall, library, community center, a friend&#8217;s house or a local cooling shelter\/center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Stay aware<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite your best efforts, sometimes the heat just may be too much for you.
