Experts estimate that up to 40 percent of these deaths are preventable when rapid blood transfusions are administered in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks in part to generous <a href=\"https:\/\/give.multicare.org\/our-foundations\/multicare-health-foundation\/\">MultiCare Health Foundation<\/a> donors, Pierce County paramedics can immediately perform whole blood transfusions armed with the necessary equipment, latest training and ongoing support required to sustain the program.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tacoma.gov\/government\/departments\/fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tacoma Fire Department<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralpiercefire.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Pierce Fire &amp; Rescue<\/a> are now the first in the region to offer this vital intervention for trauma patients experiencing severe blood loss. The whole blood program aims to improve survival rates by closing the gap between the time of a traumatic injury and when a patient receives definitive hospital care.<\/p>\n<p>By immediately replacing lost blood with universally compatible whole blood product \u2014 which contains red blood cells, plasma and platelets \u2014 at the scene or during transport, paramedics can stabilize critically injured individuals and give them a better chance of survival.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Early results of whole blood program<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Benjamin Constance, MD, emergency physician and chief of staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/tacoma-general-hospital\/\">MultiCare Tacoma General<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/multicare-allenmore-hospital\/\">MultiCare Allenmore<\/a> hospitals, is already seeing the impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already administered blood to patients from penetrating trauma \u2014 gunshot wounds and stabbings \u2014 motor vehicle collisions, severe gastrointestinal bleeding and bleeding related to gynecological conditions,\u201d he explains. \u201cParamedics have noticed that patients \u2018immediately look better\u2019 in the paramedic rig, sharing that vital signs improve, color is coming back into faces and they are more alert on arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tacoma Fire Chief Sionna Stallings-Ala\u2019ilima is equally heartened by the program\u2019s early successes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very encouraged by the early results of the whole blood program,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s allowing our crews to begin lifesaving care in the field and increasing the odds of survivability.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stronger and healthier together<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Community partnerships are at the core of the whole blood program. Central Pierce Fire &amp; Rescue and the Tacoma Fire Department collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/bloodworksnw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloodworks Northwest<\/a>, which supplies the blood product, in addition to MultiCare and other local emergency departments.<\/p>\n<p>Philanthropic support of this groundbreaking initiative further demonstrates the community\u2019s commitment to enhancing emergency medical services and improving patient outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the support of MultiCare Health Foundation, critically ill patients can have basic labs completed, whole blood transfusion and point-of-care ultrasound assessing for life-threatening injuries prior to their arrival,\u201d Dr. Constance shares. \u201cIt\u2019s a game changer.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trauma is the number-one cause of death for people under age 45.
