{"id":38245,"date":"2025-09-26T07:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=38245"},"modified":"2025-12-31T21:52:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T21:52:47","slug":"womans-stage-4-endometrial-cancer-treated-successfully-with-combination-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/womans-stage-4-endometrial-cancer-treated-successfully-with-combination-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman\u2019s stage 4 endometrial cancer treated successfully with combination therapy","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Erratic periods are normal as women approach menopause, but Stephanie Alvarez, 53, noticed when something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was having periods about one to two times a year, but the one I had October 2024 was lasting more than a month,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez wasn\u2019t too concerned, and neither was her primary care provider \u2014 but she still got on her doctor\u2019s schedule in December to get checked out. By November, new symptoms cropped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Nov. 20, I started having lower back pain, persistent pain in my abdomen and I was urinating blood,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>She went to urgent care on her lunch break the next day and was advised to go to the emergency department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my mind I was thinking they\u2019d give me some medicine and I\u2019d go back to work, but I was there for several hours,\u201d Alvarez adds.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a physical exam, she received abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, a CT scan, and blood and urine tests.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A shocking diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe provider who saw me said, \u2018We think it\u2019s cancer,\u2019\u201d Alvarez recalls. \u201cI was in a daze. I was there by myself. If I had known it would have been serious, I would have had friends or family with me. Everything was a blur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was referred for follow-up with <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/provider\/christopher-a-breed\/\">Christopher Breed, MD<\/a>, a gynecologic oncologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/services\/cancer-care\/\">MultiCare Cancer Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister is a nurse and came with me to my first appointment with Dr. Breed,\u201d Alvarez says. \u201cHe showed us the scans and why they thought it was cancer. She had a lung CT scan the next day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephanie was initially diagnosed with an aggressive form of uterine cancer,\u201d Dr. Breed explains. \u201cThe additional imaging showed it clearly had metastasized throughout her pelvis, abdomen, lungs and neck, which was classified as stage 4C poorly differentiated endometrial cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shifting the treatment plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Because of the new findings, Alvarez\u2019s treatment plan changed. They were knowledgeable, caring, funny and efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Support at every step<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alvarez, who works at Weyerhaeuser, went on intermittent medical leave during treatment and says her workplace was extremely supportive and flexible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork was an important aspect for me to get through this,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was nice to work after getting through the rough days and get my mind off things.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38247\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38247\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38247\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"group of people huddled together\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/Stephanie-Alvarez_group-photo-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alvarez and family on her last day of treatment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She also credits her support system, especially her family members connected to health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m from the world of IT and sales, so I&#8217;m way out of my league, but my sister is an RN, my niece is an RN, my sister-in-law is a pharmacist, my brother works at the Gates Foundation, and their knowledge and unique skill sets were invaluable to me during this experience,\u201d she adds. \u201cI had a village of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By Alvarez\u2019s fourth treatment, her results looked so good, Dr. Breed said it was time for surgery to remove the primary source of the cancer.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A remarkable response to treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWithin a few days of surgery, Dr. Breed said everything looked great,\u201d Alvarez says. \u201cThe pathology report and imaging showed \u2018a complete response to therapy \u2014 no residual cancer.\u2019 It was excellent news. Both Dr. Breed and Dr. R were thrilled with how I responded to my treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After two more rounds of her treatment, she began receiving just immunotherapy, which she\u2019ll get once every six weeks for one to two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephanie is currently in remission with no evidence of disease,\u201d Dr. Breed adds. \u201cShe has had a truly remarkable response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Breed says her case highlights the power of the combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy \u2014 the most dramatic advancement in the treatment of endometrial cancers in the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez will get CT scans every three months for the next two years to make sure there are still no signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the end of last year until May of this year, it has been a whirlwind, but MultiCare made it happen,\u201d she says. \u201cEveryone has been so supportive and helpful.
