Sometimes old wounds resurface, political disagreements arise or unspoken tensions escalate into conflict, turning a festive vibe into a stressful one.<\/p>\n<p>You may feel pressured to keep the peace \u2014 or simply wonder how you\u2019ll keep your cool. Navigating family dynamics can be challenging, but it doesn\u2019t have to derail your holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got tips to help you preserve your sense of calm and support more positive, meaningful interactions with those you care about.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Set your intention: How you want to show up at holiday gatherings<\/h2>\n<p>Holiday stress can make it easy to slip into old roles and unhealthy patterns of behavior. In other words, we may not be the best versions of ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you ensure you don\u2019t default to old habits? It starts with a little self-reflection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk yourself how you want to show up at a family event, and write it down,\u201d says Mark Ingoldby, LICSW, a clinical social worker with the <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/services\/mental-behavioral-health\/\">MultiCare Behavioral Health Network<\/a>. \u201cWhat kind of person do you want to be, and what kinds of behaviors reflect your values?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doing this exercise before a gathering can help you stay true to who you are now \u2014 regardless of how others are acting \u2014 and set healthy boundaries.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Identify your holiday stress triggers<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set your intention, consider what triggers may throw you off. Are there certain people, behaviors or situations that may lead you to revert to old patterns or compromise who you are?<\/p>\n<p>Also, what signs indicate you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed, or at risk of letting difficult family dynamics dictate your behavior? For example, do your hands start to feel clammy, does your heart rate increase or do you get quiet?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you know these things about yourself, you can start to develop strategies for how you\u2019re going to avoid or cope with triggers,\u201d says Lauren Baker, MS, LMHC, a mental health therapist with the MultiCare Behavioral Health Network. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s deep breathing, walking away from a situation until you feel calmer or reinforcing a boundary you\u2019ve set.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3. Set healthy boundaries and stick to them<\/h2>\n<p>Boundaries help you prioritize your well-being, avoid overcommitting and reduce the potential for conflict at holiday gatherings. They involve communicating your needs and clarifying expectations about how you\u2019ll interact with others.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of boundaries you may need to set, ranging from how much time you\u2019ll spend at an event to what behaviors you\u2019ll tolerate. Here\u2019s how to effectively set and reinforce boundaries:<\/p>\n<h3>Start early<\/h3>\n<p>Have discussions about your plans ahead of time to head off conflict during the actual event. It can be helpful to put it in writing \u2014 in an email, for example \u2014 so there is no ambiguity.<\/p>\n<h3>Use \u201cI\u201d statements<\/h3>\n<p>Frame the conversation in terms of what you need by using \u201cI\u201d statements. This reduces the potential for arguments, blame and defensiveness.<\/p>\n<p>For example: \u201cPolitics stress me out. I\u2019m not going to talk about that today, so I can enjoy our time together.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Be direct and clear<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re setting a boundary before an event or in the moment, be assertive, clear and kind. You don\u2019t need to offer lengthy explanations or apologies.<\/p>\n<p>For example: \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to seeing everyone, but I\u2019m not comfortable being around heavy drinking, so I\u2019m going to leave by 8pm.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Avoid ultimatums<\/h3>\n<p>While they may appear similar, ultimatums are different from boundaries. Ultimatums like \u201cIf you keep yelling at me, I\u2019m leaving,\u201d are focused on controlling another person\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, boundaries like \u201cI\u2019m not comfortable listening to yelling.
