\u201cI used to live right here,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Only a year removed from these surroundings, Bowden\u2019s memory hasn\u2019t had long to fade. Now, she\u2019s living proof of her creed: \u201cAs soon as you change your mind, you can change your whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The strength to accept help<\/h2>\n

In June 2024, Bowden had been unhoused for eight years. As she was walking her new puppy, Bossy Boy, between Interstate 5 and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, she met mental health advocate Brandon Rabisa and Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare\u2019s Homeless Outreach Stabilization and Transition (HOST) team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked to her and learned she wanted to get out of there and get off the streets,\u201d Rabisa recalls.<\/p>\n

\"\"Supported by donors and administered by the Washington State Health Care Authority\u2019s Recovery Support Services<\/a>, the HOST program provides outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness and other health challenges, including substance use disorder (SUD). Multidisciplinary teams offer behavioral health and medical, rehabilitative and peer services in the field to those without consistent access to care.<\/p>\n

By that evening, the team had found a hotel room for Bowden and soon helped her enroll in SUD treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey stored my stuff and made sure I had everything I needed,\u201d she reflects. \u201cThey gave me a safe place without being overpowering or overbearing. It was a big relief that they were with me every step.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Bowden began her recovery journey, Bossy Boy was temporarily placed with a foster family.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo find someone that would take care of my dog while I took care of my life was amazing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Charting a professional path<\/h2>\n

While Bowden regained her footing, the HOST team helped her overcome barriers to employment. After helping her get important documents, such as a birth certificate and Social Security card, the team further connected her with a position driving shuttle buses for Pierce Transit.<\/p>\n

Bowden still remembers how it felt to share the news of her job offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe excitement was electric,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I was homeless for those years, I never felt like I had anybody. So, knowing I have this team of people that\u2019s cheering me on has made me feel like, \u2018You\u2019re not alone; we\u2019re in it with you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That steady income enabled Bowden to find an apartment, reunite with Bossy Boy, pay her bills, buy a car and even start putting some money away. In May, she used those savings to graduate from National Standard Trucking School in Milton with her commercial driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

Today, Bowden is behind the wheel full-time as a semitruck driver. She credits her many achievements to the wraparound support of people like Rabisa, peer specialist Tesla Hanrahan and the entire HOST program.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s been a group effort, Rabisa knows that Bowden\u2019s determination has made all the difference.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just has so much drive,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe can want it for every client we work with, but she\u2019s wanted it from the get-go. She\u2019s the real hero in all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rediscovering hope<\/h2>\n

Bowden\u2019s new reality has her seeing life through a different lens.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor so long, I was just stuck in survival mode,\u201d she explains. \u201cNow, it\u2019s dawned on me that anything is possible, and I never used to look at the future like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyday moments remind Bowden just how far she\u2019s come. While parking her truck recently, she encountered someone from her past \u2014 who looked up and didn\u2019t recognize her. Realizing the distance she\u2019d put between herself and her previous life, Bowden was moved to tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt so unbelievably good,\u201d she reflects.<\/p>\n

To celebrate one year of recovery, Bowden decided to skydive.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you had told me over a year ago that I\u2019d be living on my own, driving semitrucks and leaping out of planes, I would have laughed at you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

A community-backed effort<\/h2>\n

Donors are essential to HOST\u2019s ability to deliver whole-person care, allowing more clients to access critical support for transportation, basic needs and housing \u2014 all of which help build lasting stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving this kind of funding, especially for housing, is really the difference-maker in whether we change someone\u2019s life,\u201d Rabisa says.<\/p>\n

Bowden thanks everyone who donates to the program that\u2019s given her a new trajectory and hopes it will impact even more people in her situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHOST made it possible for my entire life to turn 180 degrees, from ruins to riches,\u201d she explains. \u201cNot riches like money \u2014 it\u2019s more fulfilling than that. My life is rich because I know I have a second life now, and it\u2019s an amazing one.\u201d<\/p>\n
