Around Halloween last year, Todd Murray\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0feeling well and\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know what was wrong.<\/p>\n

Murray, 55, says he didn\u2019t have any particular symptoms that were bothering him \u2014 it was just a general feeling of being unwell.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t put my finger on it,\u201d he adds.\u00a0\u201cI just could tell something wasn\u2019t right.\u201d<\/p>\n

His family practice doctor did some blood work and found his bilirubin counts were high.\u00a0He then had an endoscopic ultrasound and a biopsy of his pancreas.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the procedure, the surgeon said it looked like pancreatic cancer,\u201d Murray says.<\/p>\n

Pathology results from the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis a few days later.<\/p>\n

He met with MultiCare Cancer Institute medical oncologist\u00a0Sunil Rangarajan, MD<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cDr. R\u201d), and surgeon\u00a0Alex Cantafio, MD<\/a>, to\u00a0come up with\u00a0a\u00a0plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Cantafio and Dr.\u00a0R are\u00a0amazing doctors,\u201d Murray says. \u201cWhen I met them, I thought, \u2018These are my guys.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Things moved quickly from there, and Murray was scheduled for surgery in mid-November to remove the cancerous tumor from his pancreas.<\/p>\n

The specific surgery he underwent is called the Whipple procedure, where the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine, the\u00a0gallbladder\u00a0and the bile duct are removed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was the perfect candidate for\u00a0a Whipple\u00a0because the cancer hadn\u2019t metastasized,\u201d Murray adds.<\/p>\n

His\u00a0surgery was the first robotic Whipple procedure performed in the South Sound region.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what I understand, the robotic Whipple is less\u00a0invasive\u00a0and you\u00a0heal\u00a0a lot quicker,\u201d Murray says. \u201cI was up walking around the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to faster healing, robotic-assisted surgery also translates to shorter hospital stays,\u00a0less\u00a0pain\u00a0and\u00a0less\u00a0discomfort.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of an incision that stretches across the abdomen, there are just several small incisions,\u201d Dr. Cantafio explains. \u201cIt’s a massive difference in surgical site size.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very fortunate mine was caught early. I’m really appreciative that MultiCare had the robot and had recruited Dr. Cantafio. My luck, my timing, has been mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No cancer was found in\u00a0Murray\u2019s\u00a0lymph nodes, and there was no evidence of cancer in the nerves or small blood vessels.<\/p>\n

\u201cPancreatic adenocarcinoma is typically a very devastating, aggressive cancer,\u201d says Dr. Cantafio. \u201cBut because Todd\u2019s was in an early stage and he\u2019s a young, healthy man, he\u2019s in the best scenario for long-term survival.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murray, whose father passed away from pancreatic cancer a few years ago, underwent\u00a0genetic testing.\u00a0It\u00a0revealed he has a genetic mutation linked to pancreatic cancer and melanoma.<\/p>\n

He spoke to his sisters following those results.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went through our family tree and,\u00a0in addition\u00a0to our father, we could\u00a0identify\u00a0quite a few others on\u00a0our\u00a0dad\u2019s side who had pancreatic cancer or melanoma. My mother\u2019s mother also had pancreatic cancer,\u201d Murray says. \u201cDr. R advised that my sisters should do genetic testing and get screened to make sure they aren\u2019t going to have the same cards I had been dealt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murray is currently undergoing a six-month cycle of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause mine is genetic, they are treating it pretty aggressively,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

Murray, who\u2019s the director of the Washington State University Puyallup\u00a0Research and Extension Center,\u00a0loves his job\u00a0and also\u00a0enjoys refinishing furniture and hiking in his spare time. He looks forward to getting\u00a0back to his work and hobbies once treatment is complete.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0hard thing\u00a0about diagnosis for me was that I know what pancreatic cancer means because my dad had it, and I feel\u00a0very fortunate\u00a0mine was caught early,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0says. \u201cI’m\u00a0really appreciative\u00a0that MultiCare had the robot and had recruited Dr. Cantafio.
