While still attending high school with an uncertain future, I took a chance on health care, despite lacking confidence in myself. It was then that I discovered my passion for caring for others. Twenty-five years later, I&#8217;m still dedicated to this field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rewards of working in health\u00a0care are immense.\u00a0I believe every hospital role\u00a0is crucial.\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0never lost enthusiasm for my work, and I attribute this to the life-changing experiences\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0had. Anyone can walk the halls on any given day and be greeted with a friendly\u202fhello. Because of health care,\u00a0I met my husband and have worked with him for 24 years and married 21 of those years.\u00a0Following in\u00a0my\u00a0mother-in-law\u2019s footsteps,\u202fwho also worked at Valley, now our daughter works with us in dietary while going to school for\u00a0pharmacy.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a family thing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you show up for your patients beyond just your daily work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strive to treat each patient with the same care that I would offer to my own family members. Throughout my career,\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0learned valuable lessons that have enabled me to\u00a0refine my skills. I find joy in small accomplishments, like simply helping a patient get out of bed. I prioritize being genuine with my patients and offer support when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you hope to impact the community through your work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to be a positive influence through my actions, mentoring, being an available resource. I love to get involved with bringing awareness to various causes, such as the American Heart Association \u2014 also by volunteering with local food banks, and I have volunteered at crisis nurseries events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about your job? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the people I work with, the focus on caring for patients and families, and the collaborative environment. It all feels like an extended family, and I treat every patient as if they were part of mine. The atmosphere is warm, with friendly greetings,\u00a0smiles\u00a0and\u00a0camaraderie. Looking back on the\u00a0nearly 34\u00a0years\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been with MultiCare,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen so many changes, so much growth and so many exciting things happen across the organization. What keeps me here is knowing that the work we do truly matters and that patients choose to come to MultiCare because of the people who work here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you show up for your patients beyond just your daily work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0checking patients in, I try to be welcoming and empathetic. I want them to feel reassured that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0going to be well cared for. Part of my role is also training, and I always want our patients to have\u00a0a great\u00a0experience. That means making sure their registration is complete and\u00a0accurate, their insurance is\u00a0verified\u00a0and their billing is handled\u00a0properly\u00a0so they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to worry about those things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also believe in building strong relationships with other departments so we can provide continuity of care. When patients move on to their next step, I like to give them an idea of what to expect and reassure them that everything is going to be\u00a0OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you hope to\u00a0impact\u00a0the community through your work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know people have a choice in where they receive their care, so I always make a point to\u00a0say\u00a0\u2018Thank you for choosing\u00a0Allenmore.\u2019\u00a0I hope that by creating a welcoming and supportive experience, patients feel confident and cared for from the moment they arrive. Even small moments\u00a0\u2014\u00a0like offering a smile or helping someone who is struggling during check-in\u00a0\u2014\u00a0can make a difference in someone\u2019s day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about your job?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I love most about my job is the people and the community we serve. I\u00a0truly appreciate\u00a0the team I work with and the support we have from our leadership. It means a lot when leadership takes the time to round on our department, ask how\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0doing\u00a0and see if\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0anything we need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also believe in taking care of myself so I can come to work and take care of others. After almost 34 years with MultiCare, I feel incredibly blessed to still be here. I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0be where I am today without the people who helped me along the way. I saw firsthand the importance of having a team of professionals who\u00a0exhibit\u00a0nothing but excellence,\u00a0compassion\u00a0and dedication to their patients. MultiCare\u2019s values of collaboration, excellence,\u00a0compassion\u00a0and joy are aligned with my own care ethos\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I know that the work I do directly\u00a0impacts\u00a0patient care and contributes towards their outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about your job? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love having opportunities to work very closely with an interdisciplinary team of motivated professionals who want to move the needle and make cancer care more accessible in our communities. It is not within our scope to make medical diagnoses, but sometimes what we\u00a0observe\u00a0at the bedside can point to concerns beyond speech and swallowing. For example, last year a patient presented with progressive swallowing issues, and neurological signs during my evaluation led to a neurology consult and\u00a0timely\u00a0treatment for\u00a0myasthenia\u00a0gravis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you hope to impact the community through your work ? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to increase awareness of healthy cognition, communication, voice use and swallowing in the Yakima community so that people know when to seek help, receive intervention as early as possible and improve their quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about your job? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the challenge of the hospital setting \u2014 the fast pace, variety of cases and collaboration across disciplines. No day is the same. One hour I might be counseling a family on communication and swallowing strategies after a stroke; the next, helping someone with a tracheostomy hear their voice again through a speaking valve, or cheering on that first bite of ice cream after coming off a ventilator. Nutrition\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just about meals;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about dignity, healing,\u00a0comfort\u00a0and connection. I wanted a role where I could make a real difference in someone\u2019s day, and nutrition services offered that impact in a very immediate, concrete way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0always believed that everyone deserves nourishing food that supports both their health and their sense of wellbeing. Working in health care allows me to combine that belief with my skills in leadership,\u00a0service\u00a0and operations.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0rewarding to know that the decisions I make\u00a0\u2014\u00a0whether designing menus, improving processes or supporting my team\u00a0\u2014\u00a0directly affect patient outcomes and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, I get to support a team that cares deeply about what they do. Watching them bring comfort,\u00a0kindness\u00a0and nutrition to patients makes me proud of the work we do together. I stay because I see the difference we make: a patient eating after a tough day, a family feeling cared for, a team member feeling supported and valued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0also motivated by the challenge. Health care is always evolving, and Nutrition Services evolves with it. I enjoy continuously improving systems, elevating\u00a0service\u00a0and finding new ways to make nutrition an essential part of patient-centered care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing that the work we do contributes to healing and helps people feel seen and cared for continues to drive me every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you show up for your patients beyond just your daily work? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me,\u00a0\u2018showing up\u2019\u00a0for patients goes beyond making sure meals are delivered on time or menus are correct.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about being present,\u00a0attentive\u00a0and human in moments that matter. Here are the ways I try to show up beyond the technical side of my job:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI take time to connect.\u00a0When\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0on the units, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just check trays; I stop, introduce myself, ask how the patient is\u00a0doing\u00a0and really listen. Sometimes patients need\u00a0encouragement to eat, sometimes they need a quick fix to feel more\u00a0comfortable\u00a0and sometimes they just need someone to acknowledge them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look for\u00a0the unspoken\u00a0needs.\u00a0A patient might not ask for help, but I pay attention to signs\u00a0\u2014\u00a0untouched meals, discomfort, confusion\u00a0about diet orders. I make sure those small signals\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0go unnoticed and coordinate with nursing or clinical teams when something needs extra attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI support families,\u00a0too.\u00a0Families often feel overwhelmed. I\u00a0offer assistance\u00a0with menu questions, food preferences, cultural\u00a0needs\u00a0or simply reassurance that their loved one is being cared for. Sometimes offering a warm beverage or a moment of understanding goes a long way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI advocate behind the scenes.\u00a0A lot of my support happens indirectly: improving processes, adjusting workflows, training the\u00a0team\u00a0or resolving\u00a0barriers\u00a0so patients experience smoother, more compassionate care.
