What\u2019s more, 118 volunteers transitioned to staff roles, further strengthening MultiCare\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Meet three volunteers \u2014 Alex Zamora, Cassie DeView and Michael Berman \u2014 making a difference day after day.<\/p>\n<h2>Comfort when needed most<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-39278\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1-755x1024.jpg 755w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1-768x1042.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1-1132x1536.jpg 1132w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Alex-Zamora_1.jpg 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/>As a University of Washington Tacoma undergrad studying biomedical sciences, Alex Zamora began volunteering in the emergency department at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/\">MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> to gain valuable patient care experience. She quickly fell in love with making a positive impact on kids and families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s getting coffee for parents, coloring with a child or providing a warm blanket, each encounter is different and intrinsically rewarding,\u201d Zamora shares. \u201cAny ounce of comfort I can give a family is so encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the small moments of meaningful connection that stay with her. Zamora recalls a patient\u2019s eyes lighting up when she brought them hot chocolate, and on another occasion sitting with a shy young girl who slowly warmed up as they colored together, eventually laughing and chatting by the time her parents arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started volunteering to make an impact on others, but each day I show up to a shift, I leave changed \u2014 more impacted by the families and patients I interact with,\u201d she reflects.<\/p>\n<p>Zamora hopes her acts of kindness help patients feel seen and cared for, while also inspiring others to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to encourage others that you can make an impact on your community by giving some of your time and seeking to meet the needs of others, instead of your own, for a few hours,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h2>A career of caring<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-39277\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-730x1024.jpg 730w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-768x1078.jpg 768w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-1095x1536.jpg 1095w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-1460x2048.jpg 1460w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Cassie-DeView_1-scaled.jpg 1824w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/>Since 2025, Cassie DeView has been a steady presence in the medical\u2011surgical and emergency departments at <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/multicare-allenmore-hospital\/\">MultiCare Allenmore Hospital<\/a>. In addition to supporting staff with tasks such as cleaning, equipment stocking and helping with discharges, she\u2019s always there for patients with a snack, drink or hygiene item \u2014 or just ready to listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI provide an ear in a space where people are often scared or feel unheard, and I do my best to help them feel validated and safe,\u201d DeView explains.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s helped train new volunteers and even became an intern to assist with more hospital projects and responsibilities. This spring, DeView is stepping into a full-time staff position at Allenmore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy passion for helping others and the amazing staff I have had the privilege to work with keeps me coming back,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n<p>Recently accepted into the nursing program at Tacoma Community College, DeView has dreams of using her vocation to further reduce barriers to health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to help those in underserved communities by providing better access to services through things like mobile health units, and to help bridge the gap in services to those who need them most,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h2>Welcoming a new season<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39276\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/04\/Michael-Berman_1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>After a few months of retirement in 2023, Michael Berman realized he wasn\u2019t ready to sit still. Wanting to do something meaningful, he began volunteering at the <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/auburn-medical-center\/\">MultiCare Auburn Medical Center<\/a> registration desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving back to my community seemed like the perfect way to accomplish that,\u201d Berman says. \u201cI can think of no other better way to spend my time and effort than helping the staff and patients of Auburn Medical Center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he\u2019s been the upbeat, welcoming face patients encounter on arrival, ready to greet them, answer questions or provide helpful directions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to lighten their spirits if I can,\u201d Berman explains. \u201cA trip to the hospital can be intimidating and stressful for some people. If I can get a smile or a laugh from them, I hope it goes to easing their minds about what they\u2019re there for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over time, he\u2019s built friendships with staff members and enjoyed meeting everyone who walks through the doors. Berman takes pride in representing the hospital, hoping each interaction reflects the high level of care offered within.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the staff at Auburn is top-notch,\u201d he shares. \u201cIt\u2019s a pleasure working with them and being there for them.
