Spokane resident Sheri Shaw, 55, has always been active. She played softball, volleyball and basketball in high school, and continued playing on recreational sports teams while in the Air Force.<\/p>\n

Shaw plays golf about once a week, and three years ago she picked up tennis because one of her daughters started playing.<\/p>\n

Then, last summer, she started experiencing hip pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was from playing tennis,\u201d Shaw recalls. \u201cBut I noticed I was stopping the full rotation of my golf swing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite having a high pain tolerance, she decided to take a month-long break from activities and do physical therapy to see if her hip felt better.<\/p>\n

But it got worse.<\/p>\n

Shaw extended her break from activities through the end of summer, until a tennis partner convinced her to play in a tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played five matches in three days, then that\u2019s all she wrote,\u201d she says. \u201cMy quality of life tanked.\u201d<\/p>\n

She couldn\u2019t go up and down stairs. She tried icing her hip, she took anti-inflammatory medications \u2014 anything to help it feel better \u2014 but nothing was working.<\/p>\n

Shaw then saw a doctor who took X-rays that revealed her hip joint was bone on bone. There were bone spurs and cysts as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked like my hip was fused \u2014 I couldn\u2019t even tell where the hip socket was,\u201d she says. \u201cAt this point, I was doing the one-step shuffle. I thought, \u2018I can\u2019t live like this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That’s when she had a consult with Keenan Atwood, MD<\/a>, at MultiCare Rockwood Valley Orthopedics & Sports Medicine<\/a>, who said a hip replacement looked like the best option.<\/p>\n

Shaw\u2019s surgery \u2014 an outpatient procedure \u2014 was at the end of January.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the anesthesia wore off, that deep-seated pain I had been experiencing was gone,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThey had me walking within a few hours \u2014 it was so heavenly, I wanted to run!\u201d<\/p>\n

Recovery went so well for her, she didn\u2019t need to stay on pain medications.<\/p>\n

\u201cSheri did very well postoperatively and healed great,\u201d Dr. Atwood says. \u201cShe tolerated the surgery exceptionally and is a great example of what a total hip replacement can do for people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only one week into physical therapy and she was where most people are at week six, says her physical therapist.<\/p>\n
