{"id":39327,"date":"2026-05-08T07:00:55","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T07:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=39327"},"modified":"2026-05-08T20:48:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T20:48:58","slug":"corks-and-crush-breast-cancer-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/corks-and-crush-breast-cancer-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Corks &amp; Crush helps fund the future of breast cancer care","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, May 16, 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/corksandcrush\/\">Corks &amp; Crush<\/a>, MultiCare Good Samaritan Foundation\u2019s annual fundraising gala, will celebrate 20 years of supporting a healthier East Pierce County.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two decades, guests and sponsors have championed causes that strengthen health care at <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/good-samaritan-hospital\/\">MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital<\/a>, from emergency care and cardiology to children\u2019s therapy and more.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the event helped raise over $1 million to expand local cancer care through <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/multicare-cancer-institute-puyallup\/\">MultiCare Cancer Institute \u2013 Puyallup<\/a>, and those funds are already making an impact.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Coming soon<\/h2>\n<p>This summer, a breast clinic will open at Good Samaritan across the street from the Dr. Richard C. Ostenson Cancer Resource Center. Funded in part by last year\u2019s Corks &amp; Crush proceeds, the standalone space represents a major medical step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity to partner with Good Samaritan Hospital, the Foundation and the broader East Pierce community to launch a breast cancer-focused clinic, with a surgical focus, has been a dream for a decade,\u201d shares <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/provider\/yarrow-mcconnell\/\">Yarrow McConnell, MD<\/a>, interim chief medical officer and breast oncology medical leader at MultiCare Cancer Institute. \u201cIt\u2019s something that really defines a community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39329 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/05\/Breast-Clinic-floorplan.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1139\" height=\"815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/05\/Breast-Clinic-floorplan.png 1139w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/05\/Breast-Clinic-floorplan-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/05\/Breast-Clinic-floorplan-1024x733.png 1024w, https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2026\/05\/Breast-Clinic-floorplan-768x550.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1139px) 100vw, 1139px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Together, Dr. McConnell and surgical oncologist <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/provider\/elaine-jayne-buckley\/\">Elaine Jayne Buckley, MD<\/a>, will provide extensive services, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breast cancer surgeries: lumpectomy, mastectomy and lymph node procedures<\/li>\n<li>Oncoplastic surgery<\/li>\n<li>Skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy with reconstruction<\/li>\n<li>Prophylactic (preventive) mastectomy for high-risk patients<\/li>\n<li>Flat aesthetic closure after mastectomy<\/li>\n<li>Surgery for benign breast conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients will also be able to schedule appointments for risk assessments, genetic testing, screening recommendations and discussions with the plastic surgery team around potential breast reconstruction as part of their treatment plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just so excited that we have the resources, the space and the right team to do the work that\u2019s going to be located right here in the core of Puyallup,\u201d Dr. McConnell says. \u201cWe really need these local services that serve the population and people here.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A patient-centered experience<\/h2>\n<p>The new clinic will be designed to ease anxiety from the moment someone walks in, especially since many patients seeking specialty breast care don\u2019t have cancer but still carry a great deal of worry. By separating the clinic from the existing cancer resource center \u2014 yet still having it close enough to allow for seamless coordination, if needed \u2014 the team aims to create a calmer, more reassuring experience.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that many traditional medical environments can often feel cold and unwelcoming, particularly for women, Dr. McConnell further stresses the importance of every detail bringing comfort and warmth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to create a space where they feel much more comfortable being vulnerable and seeking care for these important issues,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>This approach reflects a broader vision for the future of cancer care \u2014 one centered on hope rather than fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want [patients] to be able to go to a place that\u2019s not about tough treatments and dark days but that\u2019s about the future,\u201d Dr. McConnell shares. \u201cSo, what do we need to bring into our cancer treatment environment now to maintain and grow that hope for the future? That\u2019s what we need to be focusing on.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Carrying on a generous legacy<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to Corks &amp; Crush donors, the breast clinic will be rooted in community generosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s enough words to express my level of gratitude,\u201d Dr. McConnell reflects. \u201cIt\u2019s overwhelming, to say the least, when I think about \u2026 the hundreds of patients I see every year that these services are for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On May 16, hundreds of guests will gather at the bedazzled Washington State Fair Event Center for a special 20th anniversary gala, ready to support lifesaving cancer care at their local hospital.
