{"id":39350,"date":"2026-05-15T07:00:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=39350"},"modified":"2026-05-12T19:45:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T19:45:58","slug":"summer-injury-prevention-from-emergency-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/summer-injury-prevention-from-emergency-doctor\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer injury prevention tips from an emergency medicine doctor","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From mountain hikes to home improvement projects, summer is peak season for outdoor activity in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>Summer also has a reputation for something else \u2014 a surge in injury-related visits to the emergency department (ED).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSummer brings a noticeable rise in injuries like burns, fractures, head trauma and eye trauma,\u201d says Heather Justice, MD, an emergency medicine doctor and medical director of <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/location\/multicare-emergency-bremerton\/\">MultiCare Emergency &#8211; Bremerton<\/a>. \u201cToo often we think, \u2018It won\u2019t happen to me.\u2019 But slowing down and taking basic precautions can help prevent many injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are Dr. Justice\u2019s top tips for embracing summer adventure without landing yourself or a loved one in the ED.<\/p>\n<h2>Tip 1: Wear a helmet when riding e-bikes or scooters<\/h2>\n<p>Electric bikes and scooters can be a fast, convenient way to get around, but they can also cause serious injury \u2014 especially when riders skip the helmet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRiding e-bikes or scooters without a helmet is extremely dangerous,\u201d Dr. Justice says. \u201cThey can easily reach high speeds \u2014 25 miles per hour or more \u2014 and people often ride them on roadways, increasing the risk of collisions with vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamasurgery\/fullarticle\/2815376?guestAccessKey=ada36dc4-71ad-4587-956b-197fbe67b06b&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=022124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/a> found a 49-fold increase in e-bike riders with head trauma over a five-year period. Head trauma can be fatal or have lasting consequences that affect your ability to think and function.<\/p>\n<p>Even though most states* don\u2019t require helmets for e-bikes or scooters, wearing one can help prevent or reduce the severity of head injuries. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/helmets.org\/ebike.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute<\/a> for advice on choosing a helmet.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should be especially cautious, as kids and teens are particularly vulnerable to severe injuries from e-bikes and scooters. The <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/21954\/Don-t-let-children-under-16-ride-electric-scooters?__cf_chl_tk=6Crg97ZXvszrmn0_5MjHrhvfAq8gkTMU88l_3cwEfHk-1776806175-1.0.1.1-1F4wKaFVxRzPSrvb0K4shGAd8891CfFuCWF4kS_O18o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a> recommends children under the age of 16 <strong>not operate or ride motorized scooters or bikes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tip 2: Never hold fireworks in your hand<\/h2>\n<p>Many families look forward to fireworks on Independence Day, but for those who work in emergency departments, it\u2019s one of the most injury-filled holidays of the year.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2019\/07\/03\/hospital-emergency-room-visits-fourth-of-july\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly 91,000 people<\/a> visit EDs on July 4 and 5 every year in the U.S., according to the Pew Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFireworks-related injuries can be devasting,\u201d Dr. Justice says. \u201cWe see severe burns, permanent vision loss and sometimes the loss of fingers or limbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fireworks are safest when left to trained professionals, but if you choose to light them at home, keep these tips in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always place them on the ground \u2014 <strong>never hold them<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t try to relight a firework that doesn\u2019t go off<\/li>\n<li>Wait at least five minutes, then soak in water before disposing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/fourth-july-how-to-use-fireworks-safely\/\">fireworks do\u2019s and don\u2019ts<\/a> to keep you and your family safe this summer.<\/p>\n<h2>Tip 3: Be ladder-savvy<\/h2>\n<p>Outdoor summer projects like painting, cleaning gutters or washing windows come with a common hazard: falls. Ladder accidents send <a href=\"https:\/\/gitnux.org\/ladder-accident-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 80,000 people a year to emergency departments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne rule in my household is that no one climbs a ladder alone,\u201d Dr. Justice says. \u201cIf something unexpected happens, someone else needs to be there to help or call 911. It\u2019s also important to be realistic about your balance and physical ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanladderinstitute.org\/page\/BasicLadderSafety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Ladder Institute<\/a> recommends following these basic safety steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear slip-resistant shoes (avoid shoes with leather soles)<\/li>\n<li>Inspect ladders for damage or loose parts before climbing<\/li>\n<li>Place ladder on firm, level ground<\/li>\n<li>Use the right size ladder for the job \u2014 you shouldn\u2019t need to stand on the top rung<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Tip 4: Be smart about yard work<\/h2>\n<p>Yard work may be routine, but it\u2019s a frequent source of preventable injuries in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a lot of lacerations related to pruning or weed trimming,\u201d Dr. Justice says. \u201cLawn mowers can also kick up rocks or other debris that can cause harm, and if something is wrong with the mower, make sure you turn it off before checking underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips to help reduce your risk of injury:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes; gloves; long pants; and eye protection<\/li>\n<li>Clear your yard of debris like sticks, rocks or toys before mowing or trimming<\/li>\n<li>Keep children and pets away while you\u2019re using equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Tip 5: Wear a life jacket<\/h2>\n<p>From the Spokane River to Lake Washington, the Pacific Northwest is full of waterways ideal for boating, fishing or other activities. Whatever water-based adventure is on your agenda, make sure you grab a life jacket.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.wa.gov\/about\/rules-and-safety\/boater-education-safety\/wear-life-jacket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington state law requires children 12 and younger<\/a> to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times on boats under 19 feet in length. Anyone being towed by a boat, regardless of age, is required to wear one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a stickler about life jackets,\u201d Dr. Justice says. \u201cWhen you\u2019re on a boat, no matter your age or swimming ability, I recommend wearing one. You never know what\u2019s going to happen out on the water. When it comes to drowning, there are no do-overs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/tips-to-keep-your-family-safe-near-the-water\/\">Get more tips to keep your family safe near the water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tip 6: Wear the right gear for your activity<\/h2>\n<p>Many injuries happen because people underestimate outdoor conditions or skip basic protective gear. A few thoughtful choices can go a long way in preventing or lessening the impact of injuries:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fishing:<\/strong> Wear eye protection to prevent fishhook injuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inline skating<\/strong> <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>skateboarding: <\/strong>Use appropriate padding, wrist guards and helmets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mountain biking:<\/strong> Wear a helmet. Gloves, goggles and protective padding may be appropriate depending on your terrain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bicycling and scootering:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/patients-visitors\/patient-family-support-services\/childhood-safety\/safety-information\/bicycle-safety\/\">Wear a properly fitted helmet<\/a> and closed-toe shoes. Protective padding can help reduce injuries like abrasions.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Washington state does not require helmets for electric bike or scooter riders, but some cities and counties do.
