More than 110 students from high schools across the South Sound are getting a glimpse into health care careers this week at MultiCare Nurse Camp 2018, the area’s largest nurse camp, hosted at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital.<\/p>\n

The 15th annual event runs from July 9-13, offering high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing nursing and health care-related careers an opportunity to experience the hospital environment. Over the five-day camp, students join professional nurses and other health care providers as they care for patients in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Cancer Center, Labor & Delivery, Pediatric Care, and Adult Surgical Care areas at multiple MultiCare hospitals.<\/p>\n

Although the camp is free, entrance to the program is competitive due to the number of positions. Students are selected to attend the camp based on the strength of their personal statement, transcripts and a recommendation letter from a science teacher.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very excited to have such a diverse group of high school students who are eager to learn about nursing and allied health professions,\u201d says Sheri Mitchell, community outreach liaison for the MultiCare Center for Healthy Living. \u201cIt is our hope that the students will be inspired and motivated to pursue a career in health care.\u201d<\/p>\n

MultiCare has long recognized the need to encourage a more diverse and well-prepared health care workforce; holding the first Nurse Camp in 2004\u00a0with 30 students. The camp has grown in popularity each year, with an increasing number of young men considering nursing careers, too. Approximately 1,100 students have graduated from Nurse Camp over the years.<\/p>\n
