Here\u2019s the inside scoop.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy snacks can help keep your energy up and provide essential nutrients. The most helpful snacks provide some carbohydrate to give our brains and bodies energy, along with a bit of protein and\/or fat to slow digestion and keep energy levels more stable.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever gotten \u201changry,\u201d that sensation is your brain screaming for fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Even snacks that include healthy carbohydrates, such as a piece of fruit by itself, are digested and absorbed quickly \u2014 with hunger returning quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Snacks that are high in refined sugars can prompt a rise \u2014 then crash \u2014 in blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling more tired than before.<\/p>\n<p>Eating junk foods that are high in calories, sugar or fat (chips or cookies, anyone?) provide plenty of calories, but little nutritional value, possibly leading to an energy slump and\/or feelings of guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Snack time can also be an opportunity to sneak in an extra serving of fruit or vegetables, which most of us need.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some favorite combinations from the Center for Health Equity and Wellness dietitians:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An apple with a handful of almonds<\/li>\n<li>A caf\u00e9 latte \u2014 combines nutrients with a little caffeine for additional stimulation<\/li>\n<li>Whole grain crackers with an individually wrapped cheese stick or round<\/li>\n<li>Lightly sweetened Greek yogurt (dairy foods naturally contain both carbohydrates and protein, and are a great source of calcium for strong bones)<\/li>\n<li>Whole grain muffins, made with fruit and\/or nuts<\/li>\n<li>Carrots, snap peas, mini peppers or celery sticks dipped in hummus or dressing<\/li>\n<li>A banana or dried apple \u201cchips\u201d with peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>Spicy tomato juice for a little kick in your \u201cpick-me-up\u201d (counts as a vegetable serving)<\/li>\n<li>A small serving of dark chocolate, preferably with fruit and nuts<\/li>\n<li>Avocado on one slice of whole grain toast<\/li>\n<li>Dried chickpeas\/edamame\/peas provide a salty crunch, packed with protein and fiber (look for exciting spice varieties)<\/li>\n<li>A hardboiled egg and a mandarin orange<\/li>\n<li>Trail mix made with nuts, seeds and unsweetened dried fruits \u2014 mix your own for a custom blend<\/li>\n<li>Easy homemade granola cups filled with yogurt, fruit and\/or nut butter. <a href=\"https:\/\/tasty.co\/recipe\/yogurt-granola-cups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recipe<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are your favorite healthy snacks?<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever wonder what dietitians munch on midday?
