{"id":6235,"date":"2019-07-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prd-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=6235"},"modified":"2023-06-27T22:36:09","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T22:36:09","slug":"mary-bridge-childrens-courage-riders-share-motivation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/mary-bridge-childrens-courage-riders-share-motivation\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Courage riders share their motivation to pedal","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Kortney Scroger and Laura McDonald<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For nearly three decades, cyclists, Rotarians and Mary Bridge supporters have participated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Courage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This event has seen thousands of participants and volunteers, lots of smiles and nearly $13 million raised for Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital and Health Network.<\/p>\n<p>Ask anyone who has participated in Courage and they\u2019ll tell you it\u2019s an unforgettable experience. We asked several riders why they ride, and every answer had one thing in common: they ride to support care and healing for children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?px=1115321&amp;pg=personal&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scott Hatteberg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He hit one of the most famous home runs in Major League Baseball. He\u2019s been portrayed on the big screen by Chris Pratt. And he\u2019s riding Courage this August to support Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Hatteberg might be best known for having his story portrayed in the 2011 movie \u201cMoneyball.\u201d But these days, when he\u2019s not at his day job working in baseball operations for the Oakland Athletics, you can catch him riding his Cannondale around Steilacoom and Point Defiance.<\/p>\n<p>Hatteberg\u2019s family members (owners of Harmon Brewing Company) have been Courage volunteers for many years. As an avid road and mountain biker and longtime resident of Gig Harbor, Hatteberg\u2019s first Courage ride was in 2017. He\u2019s back again this year and riding with team Eldorado, pictured above. He\u2019s looking forward to his first ever ride up and down Blewett Pass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe views are gonna be worth the whole ride itself,\u201d Hatteberg says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?team_id=1931&amp;pg=team&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tiffany and Bryan Bird<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Birds have been riding Courage together since 2012. Their motivation for riding has always been children in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ride Courage because kids are our future and we want to speak for and help those who are unable to help themselves,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?px=1002000&amp;pg=personal&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chandru Narayan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Year after year, Chandru Narayan has been a top fundraiser for Courage. In his 13 years of riding, he\u2019s raised more than $84,000 for the children of Mary Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ride for the kids because they are our future,\u201d Narayan says. \u201cI made a solemn promise to my parents that I will support children\u2019s causes all of my life. This is what I intend to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?px=1002391&amp;pg=personal&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corrina Lorenz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Corrina Lorenz has been a Courage rider for eight years. She\u2019s hosted bake sales and even created a cycling tutu to spark conversations about the ride. Her motivation to ride with Courage is the families in her community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ride because of the stories I\u2019ve heard from the mouths of parents who got assistance from Mary Bridge when their medical bills piled up,\u201d Lorenz says. \u201cIt is truly heartwarming and tear-jerking to learn about the people\u2019s experiences. I ride to support the kids and parents in Puget Sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.multicare.org\/site\/TR\/Events\/General?px=1129730&amp;pg=personal&amp;fr_id=1170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob Love<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been to MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital or Mary Bridge, you\u2019ve probably seen Rob Love. He\u2019s part of the team that keeps the grounds of both hospitals looking beautiful all year.<\/p>\n<p>Rob has participated in Courage for years and there are several reasons he keeps coming back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ride because it&#8217;s the motivation I need to get into better shape,\u201d Love says. \u201cI ride because it&#8217;s fun and challenging. I ride because it&#8217;s something I can do to help make a difference for children in my community.
