But if you do end up with the flu, there are more options than ever for getting fast, affordable care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people seek care for the flu at hospital emergency rooms, which is generally not the most efficient or affordable,\u201d says Mark Mariani, MD, a physician executive with MultiCare\u2019s Retail Health division. \u201cMost people can be treated quickly through their primary care doctors, urgent care clinics, online virtual visits or our house call service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MultiCare\u2019s Puget Sound clinics can assess your symptoms, determine the best path for treatment and get you on your way quickly.<\/p>\n<h2>Options for care<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule a same-day appointment at your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/doctors\/\">MultiCare primary care physician\u2019s office<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Drop in (or schedule ahead online) at a MultiCare <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/urgent-care\/\">urgent care clinics<\/a> \u00a0\u2014 open seven days a week.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/virtualcare\/\">Virtual Care website<\/a>\u00a0or download the app for an online visit with a doctor, seven days a week.<\/li>\n<li>Request a home visit from MultiCare\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/services\/dispatch\/\">DispatchHealth<\/a>\u00a0house call service \u2014 available seven days a week in the Tacoma-Pierce County and Spokane areas. The flu vaccine can reduce the risk of flu by about 50\u201360 percent. There\u2019s still time. The flu shot is effective as long as flu viruses are circulating.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone older than 6 months old should get the flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), particularly those at higher risk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children younger than 5 but especially younger than 2<\/li>\n<li>Adults 65 and older<\/li>\n<li>Pregnant women<\/li>\n<li>Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities<\/li>\n<li>Native Americans<\/li>\n<li>People with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/disease\/high_risk.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain medical conditions<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where to get flu shots<\/h2>\n<p>MultiCare offers flu shots for adults and children at many locations throughout the Puget Sound region. Make an appointment with your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/clinics\/\">primary care provider<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/services\/primary-care\/\">pediatric provider<\/a>\u00a0or visit one of MultiCare\u2019s walk-in clinics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/immunization-clinic\/\">MultiCare Immunization Clinic at South Hill Mall<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybridge.org\/services\/primary-care\/immunization-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Bridge Immunization Clinic<\/a>\u00a0(for children 18 and under)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you get a flu shot at a retail pharmacy, make sure to let your primary care doctor know so it can be added that to your medical record.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional protections against flu<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid crowded places and close contact with people who are sick.<\/li>\n<li>Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid touching your eyes and nose, as this is how flu viruses spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Flu symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Typically, flu symptoms develop quickly and can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High fever<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Muscle aches<\/li>\n<li>Chills<\/li>\n<li>Cough<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Runny or stuffy nose<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you get the flu, take steps to feel better.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay home and rest.<\/li>\n<li>Drink plenty of fluids.<\/li>\n<li>Treat fever and cough with over-the-counter medications for comfort.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid close contact with family members so you don\u2019t pass on the illness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If symptoms don\u2019t improve, seek care.<\/p>\n<p>Seek care promptly if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have a cough, fever or other flu symptoms that don\u2019t improve.<\/li>\n<li>You are pregnant, over age 65 or otherwise at high risk of flu-related complications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More serious signs of a significant flu infection include difficulty breathing, inability to drink enough fluids and irritability in children.
