{"id":7071,"date":"2020-05-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prd-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/?p=7071"},"modified":"2023-06-27T22:32:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T22:32:06","slug":"parents-be-aware-of-mis-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/updates-www.mccdn.io\/vitals\/parents-be-aware-of-mis-c\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents: Be aware of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a rare but serious illness where\u00a0a child\u2019s body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs,\u00a0such as the stomach or intestines.<\/p>\n<p>While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not yet know what causes MIS-C, many children diagnosed with MIS-C recently had been sick with COVID-19 or had been around someone with COVID-19.\u00a0To date, there have been three cases of MIS-C in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>MIS-C can be serious, even deadly. Most children recover when they receive proper care, however, so it is important that children who may have this illness be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of this condition include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Bloodshot eyes<\/li>\n<li>Feeling extra tired<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Neck pain<\/li>\n<li>Rash<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not all children with MIS-C have the same symptoms, and these symptoms may be caused by other illnesses or conditions. However it is important that you contact your child\u2019s doctor, nurse or clinic right away if your child is showing these symptoms so they can be diagnosed and treated.<\/p>\n<p>Seek emergency care right away if your child is showing any of these emergency warning signs of MIS-C or other concerning signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bluish lips or face<\/li>\n<li>Inability to wake or stay awake<\/li>\n<li>New confusion<\/li>\n<li>Pain or pressure in the chest that does not go away<\/li>\n<li>Severe abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Trouble breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doctors may do certain tests to look for inflammation or other signs of disease. These tests might include blood tests, chest x-rays and a heart or abdominal ultrasound.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors may provide supportive care for symptoms (medicine and\/or fluids to make your child feel better) and may use various medicines to treat inflammation. Most children who become ill with MIS-C will need to be treated in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Call Mary Bridge Children&#8217;s Hospital\u00a0immediately if you have concerns. MultiCare has precautions in place to ensure that patient and visitors are safe.<\/p>\n<p>MIS-C is not contagious. However, it may be related to COVID-19, it\u2019s important to take precautions to help limit your child&#8217;s exposure to COVID-19, which is contagious.
