Understanding Peyronie\u2019s Disease<\/h2>\n

Peyronie\u2019s disease may not be a common household word for most men. But this condition is certainly not new to medicine. It was first described by a French surgeon, Francois Peyronie, as far back as the 1740s.<\/p>\n

What is it?\u00a0Peyronie\u2019s disease is characterized by a bend or curve in the penis, affecting 10-15% of men between ages 40-70.<\/p>\n

What causes it? The penile bending or curvature happens when an abnormal layer of scar tissue \u2014 most likely from mild trauma \u2014 forms under the skin of the penis. While the sheaf around the penis\u2019 outer layer typically has some flexibility, the newly-formed ridge of scar tissue can cause the penis to curve.<\/p>\n
