The best gifts often come in tiny packages. Anthony and Sara DeLegge first learned of their life-changing gift \u2014 a precious preterm baby girl \u2014 during an unexpected call from American Adoptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018We have an adoption\u00a0opportunity for\u00a0you. You have 24 hours to get on a flight\u00a0to Tacoma, Washington, and come and sign some documents\u00a0and adopt this baby girl,\u2019\u201d Sara\u00a0recalls.<\/p>\n

The DeLegge household\u00a0became a\u00a0whirlwind of activity to get everything in order, and Sara was soon on her way from Chicago, Illinois, to\u00a0the City of Destiny.\u00a0At the airport,\u00a0Sara discovered that she and Anthony could\u00a0stay at\u00a0Tree House<\/a>: A Place for Families while in Washington. The philanthropically funded family housing is just steps away from MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)<\/a>, where baby Kennedy would receive care over the next four weeks.<\/p>\n

Care and comfort\u00a0at Tacoma General\u00a0Hospital\u2019s\u00a0NICU<\/h2>\n

During the next month, expert NICU nurses and providers cared for Kennedy, while she grew strong enough to thrive on her own. Reflecting\u00a0back on this experience,\u00a0Anthony and Sara\u00a0were\u00a0moved\u00a0by the level of attention\u00a0showed\u00a0to\u00a0the littlest DeLegge.<\/p>\n

Kennedy\u2019s care team \u201cdidn\u2019t know\u00a0that\u00a0she was going to end up with a family\u00a0because she was there for a month before we got there.\u00a0If we hadn\u2019t gotten there\u00a0within the\u00a024 hours\u2019 notice, she would have gone into\u00a0the foster\u00a0system,\u201d Sara explains.\u00a0So, \u201cthey had bought\u00a0so many\u00a0outfits\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Kennedy came home with a full wardrobe.\u00a0The nurses were almost fighting over who got to\u00a0take\u00a0care of her, who got to feed her\u00a0and\u00a0give her baths. She was loved from\u00a0the second she was born.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DeLegge family also found the NICU care providers to be\u00a0kind and\u00a0generous with their time\u00a0and knowledge. Given the tight adoption window and COVID-19, the\u00a0pair had little time to\u00a0prepare for parenthood and\u00a0naturally had some pre-baby jitters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nurses\u00a0in\u00a0the NICU\u00a0(became)\u00a0my parenting class,\u201d Anthony shares.\u00a0\u201cThey were a\u00a0wonderful\u00a0asset. Even though we were there for longer than we had originally hoped for,\u00a0we had the time to learn how to be parents. So\u00a0that\u00a0when (Kennedy) came out,\u00a0we had\u00a0a lot of\u00a0confidence\u00a0that we knew how to take care of her.\u00a0I\u2019ll be forever grateful to the nurses\u00a0at the NICU.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding a support system in Tree House<\/h2>\n

With long days spent in the NICU, Tree House served\u00a0as a serene\u00a0place of rest\u00a0and refuge for Anthony and Sara.\u00a0The\u00a0DeLegges\u00a0were set-up in one of 40 private rooms,\u00a0complete with\u00a0a\u00a0phone, Internet, cable TV,\u00a0DVD player\u00a0and personal bathroom.\u00a0Water and juice were always\u00a0on\u00a0hand,\u00a0which was\u00a0crucial for Sara\u2019s\u00a0health issues. Free\u00a0laundry facilities also meant\u00a0the two could pack less\u00a0and wash Kennedy\u2019s clothes themselves.<\/p>\n

But it was the Tree House staff\u2019s warmth and compassion that truly made it a home away from home.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly,\u00a0just having the people there to\u00a0say a friendly, \u2018How is your day going?\u2019, \u2018How\u2019s Kennedy doing?\u2019\u201d had a huge impact,\u00a0Anthony says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were my support system,\u201d Sara adds. \u201cThey made our Christmas and New Year\u2019s memorable when we couldn\u2019t be there with our family or our friends. It really meant a lot to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony and Sara\u2019s gratitude extends to all\u00a0those\u00a0who have donated to Tree House and helped them have one less thing to worry about.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we could have afforded\u00a0to stay in a hotel on top of paying for the adoption,\u00a0all\u00a0of the medical expenses, the flights,\u00a0food, the legal fees, just everything,\u201d Sara says. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t have made it without you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DeLegge family plans to pay it forward and give to the Tree House every year on Kennedy\u2019s birthday\u00a0\u2014 a\u00a0legacy\u00a0honoring how they came to meet their\u00a0fast-growing, life-loving\u00a0bundle of sassiness.<\/p>\n
