Scholarly Project

Dr. Guirguis-Blake, an experienced systematic reviewer for the US Preventive Services Task Force, works alongside each senior resident for their entire third year to complete their scholarly project. Every month, we set aside on-the-clock time for each senior resident to polish a clinical question (PICO), search and appraise the literature, prepare a manuscript for publication, and deliver an evidence-based grand rounds presentation on their chosen topic. Topics have focused on residents’ clinical interests and have included primary care focused questions in pediatric, maternity, mental health, and geriatric medicine. All of our residents are primary authors on their publications and team up with their faculty advisors who provide further topic-specific guidance. Some recent topics have included: the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation in pregnancy, aerobic exercise for fibromyalgia pain, and antidepressant therapy for treatment-resistant depression.

Here are some recent first-author publications by previous residents:

Continuous vs Intermittent Fetal Monitoring for Low Risk Pregnant Women

Oral Dextrose for Prevention and Treatment of Infant Hypoglycemia

Vitamin D and Decreasing Asthma Exacerbations

Skin-to-Skin Contact for Improved Duration of Breastfeeding
