History
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the mid-1800s. Dr. Still deeply studied anatomy and physiology to create a more rational and scientific approach to patient care, thereby developing the theory that disease and physiologic dysfunction were etiologically grounding in a disordered Neuromusculoskeletal system. DOs continue to practice using a patient-focused approach to health and wellness by following the teachings of Dr. Still and applying the tenets of Osteopathy to promote the body’s natural tendency toward self-healing and health.
Osteopathic recognition
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a service that has been provided by the TFM Residency Program since its inception. Formal Osteopathic Recognition was acquired by the ACGME in 2018, which formalizes TFM’s dedication to creating an environment that supports and develops integration of Osteopathic Principles and Practices (OPP) into all residents’ education in both the didactic and clinical settings.
Inpatient osteopathic experiences
Inpatient OMM is available to all admitted TFM patients including laboring patients, newborns, post-partum mothers, pediatrics, and adult med/surg and PCU patients.
Outpatient osteopathic experiences
We have three different OMM Clinics, which occur on a rotating schedule. The Resident OMM Clinic has a resident working 1:1 with an Osteopathic Faculty treating patients. The Faculty and Pregnancy OMM Clinics are covered by the Osteopathic Faculty.
Didactics
TFM provides osteopathic didactics once a month to provide continued osteopathic medical education for all our residents throughout their training. We are dedicated to meeting all residents where they are and providing them with additional osteopathic teaching and skills to reach their individualized goals.
