At a glance

  • Each year, Sound to Narrows relies on more than 300 volunteers
  • Volunteers help with race registration, course monitoring, water stations, finish-line medals and more
  • More volunteers still needed this year

If you’ve picked up your Sound to Narrows race T-shirt or received water along the course, then chances are you’ve been helped by Aileen Takara.

For over five years, Aileen Takara, RN, has taken on different roles to help the annual Sound to Narrows road race.  She’s passed out water, welcomed runners across the finish line and registered new runners the morning of the event.

“My favorite part of volunteering is being with my fellow co-workers,” Takara says.

Each year, community members like Aileen Takara — who works for MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital — step up to provide the support that keeps race day running smoothly.

From race registration to course monitors, cheer and water stations to finish-line greeters, volunteers are a big part of what makes this hometown race a fixture of the Tacoma community.

“I volunteer at the Sound to Narrows because I know it’s usually a well-attended event and my help will definitely be needed,” Takara says.

Sound to Narrows relies on more than 300 volunteers each year. In 2025, volunteers gave over 1,000 hours of their time to make the event happen. These volunteer hours are a critical piece of the race’s success.

“Sound to Narrows is a vibrant gathering and healthy social event for our entire community,” says Hope Roberts, MultiCare grants, contracts and events manager. “The event relies on our volunteers more than anything. I encourage anyone who is curious about the event to join us this year. I promise it will put a smile on your face.”

Sound to Narrows is a community event that offers something for everyone, Roberts says. The hilly course and 12K distance provide a challenge for elite athletes, while 5K walkers of all skills and abilities find a welcoming environment.

Even babies get their introduction to Sound to Narrows with the 20-yard diaper dash.

The finish-line festival brings together race participants, along with volunteers and spectators, in a celebration of everything that makes Tacoma unique.

“Whether you’re running up that hill, tabling a booth, cheering on a friend or family member, or giving your time as a volunteer, you are part of the action,” says Roberts.

MultiCare nurses who participate in the GROW program may also receive credit (maximum four points) for their volunteer time at the Sound to Narrows.

“Sound to Narrows allows me to diversify my portfolio and support my community in a different way,” says Takara.
